Penelope Cruz Joins Sacha Baron Cohen’s New Film ‘Grimsby’ Makes Townspeople Angry: ‘Bruno’, ‘Borat’ and ‘Ali G’ Star Pokes Fun Of Soccer Hooliganism

Nothing flies under Sacha Baron Cohen’s radar - not even a small town called Grimsby in north east Lincolnshire. Grimsby is latest victim of Sacha Baron Cohen, the creator of ‘Bruno’, ‘Borat’ and ‘Ali G’. Townspeople are angry about the portrayal of their lovely town, but could they say no to stars like Penelope Cruz, Rebel Wilson and Mark Strong from being forever linked with their non-glamorous town?

‘Grimbsy’, Sacha Baron Cohen’s new movie tells a story of a British black ops spy (Mark Strong) who is forced to partner up with his dumb English football hooligan brother (Baron Cohen). In the spirit of his previous works like ‘Bruno’, ‘Borat’ and ‘Ali G’, this film makes fun of English soccer hooliganism as well as English small town mindset.

Of course the townspeople of Grimsby are mad. One thing that Sacha Baron Cohen excels in is offending people left and right. One angry Grimsby businessman expressed his disapproval of ‘Grimsby’.

“They made Grimsby out to be a terrible and dirty place to live, it’s not… I’ve lived here all my life, it’s an up-and-coming area and I’m not pleased this is the way the world will get their first and maybe only look at Grimsby.”

Matthew Brown, an official from Lincolnshire County, was much more diplomatic:

“Anything that you associate with football hooliganism is going to be negative, but I hope people will be open-minded when they watch the film. My view is quite simple. We don’t have a massive issue with hooliganism. Sacha Baron Cohen visited the area when he watched Grimsby Town [Football Club] and I understand the fans treated him well.”

But at least ‘Grimsby’ is not going to be filled with dirty-mouthed, narrow-minded male characters. With Penelope Cruz in the film, whose role is not yet specified by the ‘Grimsby’ representatives, there’s going to be some classy elements in the satire.

‘Grimsby’, starring Sacha Baron Cohen, Rebel Wilson, Mark Strong and Penelope Cruz, has begun shooting this summer and is projected to hit the cinemas in 2015.
