5 Reasons 'It's Okay, It's Love' Is One Of The Best K-Dramas Currently Airing

The SBS romantic comedy "It’s Okay, It’s Love," also known as "It's Okay, That's Love," debuted this past Wednesday.  "It’s Okay, It’s Love" stars Gong Hyo Jin and Jo In Sung, as a psychiatrist and would-be patient who become romantically entangled.

Gong Hyo Jin portrays Ji Hae Soo, a psychiatrist who has almost as many hang ups as her patients. She meets author Jang Jae Yeol, portrayed by Jo In Sung, during the taping of a talk show which is produced by her philandering boyfriend.

Jang Jae Yeol is a renowned author and radio show host, who clearly displays signs of obsessive compulsive disorder. Aside from this, he is incredibly trusting, which includes the compassion he displays for his psychotic older brother.

His trust backfires when his book concept is stolen by his journalist girlfriend, Lee Pul Ip.
Actress Yoon Ji Yi abandons her innocent image from “A Gentleman’s Dignity” to embrace the persona of the cunning writer, Lee Pul Ip.

1. EXO’s D.O is hilarious as an overzealous fanboy.

In the midst of a plagiarism scandal, Jae Yeol continues to receive support from his biggest fan. D.O channels some of what he must witness from obsessed fangirls into the slightly creepy Han Kang Woo. Jae Yeol welcomes the attention from his high school fanboy, who appears to follow him from one speaking engagement and schedule activity to another.

2. Contrary to the typical K-Drama trope, Jang Jae Yeol and Ji Hae Soo are equally matched, as two highly flawed individuals.

Hae Soo exercises her right to judge Jae Yeol for his neurological disorder, but does so compassionately. In episode two, viewers are provided the chance to gain insight into her flawed personality, which includes a father with severe cognitive impairment and a mother who has led an on-going affair with his close friend. For this reason among others, Hae Soo is almost asexual.

3. Lee Kwang Soo in a role that is not just for comedic relief, but is compassionate and heartwarming.

Lee Kwang Soo of “Running Man” fame, compassionately portrays Park Soo Kwang, a lovesick man who is dealing with a seizure disorder and Tourette Syndrome. While Lee Kwang Soo is often the butt of jokes on “Running Man,” he dials down the comedy for the role of Park Soo Kwang, which helps viewers empathize with the character.

4. The concept of so many people with mental illness living in one house is unique.

Park Soo Kwang, Ji Hae Soo, and Jang Jae Yeol reside in the home of psychiatrist Jo Dong Min. Sung Dong Il portrays Jo Dong Min, who is Hae Soo’s senior as a psychiatrist but also her first love. He is sedate and is the most balanced person in a house of completely unbalanced residents. Episode two explores what it is like for four people with such vast personality traits to reside in one house.

5. 'It's Okay, It's Love' defies the regular K-Drama trope of handsome rich chaebol meets homely, poor woman without a career path.

Viewers who have grown tired of the rich chaebol man who reluctantly falls in love with the slightly awkward poor woman will enjoy “It’s Okay, It’s Love.” As great as “Fated to Love You” and “Marriage, Not Dating” may be, they are prime examples of this overutilized plot device.

Jang Jae Yeol and Ji Hae Soo are on even ground as successful professionals, in their own right. An added benefit is the realistic chemistry between Gong Hyo Jin and Jo In Sung.

“It’s Okay, It’s Love” is a must-see K-Drama whose appeal extends past the actors into its solid and original script.

“It’s Okay, It’s Love” airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the 21:55 KST time slot that was formerly occupied by “You’re All Surrounded.”
