K-Pop Throwback: Experience The Mellow Journey Of Lee Ji Soo's 2006 Instrumental 'Flying Petals' [VIDEO]

Fans of Japanimation firm Studio Ghibli Films and their soundtracks will definitely like this one.

While we seem to live in the prime time for modern pop idols and rappers, it really is nice to kick back with a good intrumental track. And have I got one for you.

South Korean pianist Lee Ji Soo's album "Love Poem" released back in 2006, features a song entitled "Flying Petals," reminiscent of the same adventurous and fun vibe one would get from listening to the music from anime movies like "The Secret World Of Arriety" and "My Neighbor Totoro."

Although Lee is best known for composing music for several Korean dramas (including the hit show from "Spring Waltz," also from 2006), "Flying Petals" is a more lighthearted and youthful style of music.

The song starts off with a string of violins which slowly build up and blend into the piano. Soon, chimes enter the soundscape, which helps to create a sunny and cheerful atmosphere.

The choice of instruments helps maintain this gentle energy.

This isn't music meant to carry an army into battle, but rather to help us imagine a child exploring the local market for the first time. There is no sense of fear or urgency in the tempo; it seems to simply follow the pace of the protagonist's footsteps.

The piano starts off with a lot of enthusiasm, but towards the second half slowly cools down. It's as if the hero has reached their destination and their travels have come to an end.

This might sound like a really simple arrangement idea, but that's the level of complexity isn't the appeal of "Flying Petals." It isn't an overly complex arrangement, but one that pulls you in enough to leave a lasting impression.

None of the instruments are overpowering one another; the piano, chimes and violin all work together to give this track its momentum. You really feel as if you're moving forward--towards something, rather than away from it.

On "Flying Petals," Lee has conjured up an auditory journey, one best traveled without words.
