B1A4 Struggles To Find The Right Chord For Its Fans

One of B1A4's recent songs, "Glass Of Water" is fun, upbeat, and a perfect song for the hot days of summer. The group performed it at KCON 2014 and shot water guns at the audience, hitting a playful key.

If the song had been entitled "Glass Of Alcohol," the song would have lost some of its innocence. Which is precisely why B1A4 changed the lyrics before releasing the song; it would have risked excluding much of B1A4's fanbase.

While B1A4 is made up of men in their early 20's, many of the group's fans are underage, tween and early teenage girls. B1A4's lively style of songs and fun stage performances have attracted a younger audience for the idol group, which means that, as artists, B1A4 has to take the fans' ages into account.

B1A4 is recognized as one of the most artistic idol groups, with leader Jinyoung producing the majority of B1A4's songs. All of the members have had some role in making the music that the group has released, and B1A4 was featured on Million Seller as idol composer-producers.

But, while other producing-idols are generally able to release more mature songs that express their personal experience, B1A4's innocent concept and youthful fans perhaps keep the group from being able to mature seriously as artists. Even songs like "Lonely," which is a relatively sad song, has a playful sound to it.

The group has one of the most recognizable sounds in K-Pop today; B1A4's cheerful style is relatively unique among male idol groups, were powerful and sexy images are prevalent. If B1A4 were to release songs that are incredibly different from what they release nowadays, the group would risk alienating its fan base.

On its albums, B1A4 is able to show a slightly different sound than the one that it promotes with, but as long as B1A4 has a youthful image, the group has to give up some of the growth that other idol groups may seen.
