Profile Of A K-Pop Fan: Atlanta Teen Mahogany Arnold On How Super Junior Led Her To Love South Korean Music

NAME: Mahogany Arnold

AGE: 17

HOME: Atlanta, Ga.

CURRENTLY: a student at Georgia Cyber Academy

INTRO TO K-POP: "My earliest K-pop memory was hearing VIXX's 'Super Hero' in a YouTube video," Arnold said. "At the time, I didn't know what song it was or the language it was in, but the song stuck with me for weeks. A month later, while I was watching YouTube videos, a Super Junior clip came up and I instantly fell in love with them. Since then I have discovered many other groups such as Girls' Generation, EXO, BEAST, B.A.P, BOYFRIEND, SHINee and many more. Thanks to Super Junior, I have completely fallen in love with K-pop."

THE DIFFERENCE: "You can feel the passion K-pop idols have in their music," Arnold said. "They are always so hardworking and it shows. They practice even when they're tired, to put on the best performance for the fans. It's hard to put how great K-pop is, into words. If I had to, I would say it's an attention grabber. Once you hear it once you will want to hear more."

FAVORITE BAND: Super Junior

WHY SUJU: "I have a lot of favorite groups but I love Super Junior the most," Arnold said. "I love them not only because they have talent but because they are funny, hardworking and they always take care of each other and their fans. My mom even likes Super Junior, especially Shindong."

FAVORITE SUPER JUNIOR SONG: "Mr. Simple"

WHY: "There are times when I'm having a bad day and school is hard, especially since this is my last year in school and it's really tough," Arnold said. "When I listen to 'Mr. Simple' I feel better and it makes me do my best."

FAVORITE SOLO ARTIST: Henry Lau of Super Junior-M

WHY HENRY: "He can sing, dance, play the violin and piano, he knows six different languages and is a producer," Arnold said. "He's so musically talented. Not only that, but when I hear his violin it inspires me to play my violin again."

WHAT SOME AMERICANS DON'T GET ABOUT K-POP:  "Some Americans don't understand is that it's okay for an artist to act dorky or weird," Arnold said. "K-pop idols are able to express themselves honestly, unlike many American pop stars, and their fans love that."
