Barclays Premier League: Dr. Matthew Perry appointed as a Medical Advisor

The Barclays Premier League pointed the finger to Dr Matthew Perry to engage in the position of a Medical Advisor. In the new position, Dr Perry will provide advice and support to the League in relation to all medical issues affecting the competition and the League's youth programmes.

His responsibilities will also embrace of reviewing and monitoring the League's medical rules, liaising with and supporting the work of others in the areas of sports science, nutrition and other aspects of elite performance and providing support and guidance for Premier League club medical personnel.

The role is considered a part-time and that Dr Perry will report to Premier League Director of Football, Mike Foster. He will continue in his role as a first-team doctor and a senior clinician at Wolverhampton Wanderers, a position he owns since 2001.

Dr Perry is believed to have a large range of experience and qualifications in the sports medicine and management fields, including an MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine from the University of Bath and an MSc in Management from the University of Warwick.

He has also chaired the Shropshire Primary Care Group, and has been a GP Partner at Albrighton Medical Practice for several years.

"We are extremely pleased that Matt has agreed to join the Premier League as our first Medical Advisor," Foster said. "His experience and skills make him ideally placed to provide guidance to the Board and different departments across the League, support Premier League club doctors and work closely with the FA and other stakeholders to make sure that we are at the forefront of sports medicine."

Dr Perry declared he was looking forward to the "exciting challenge" of the newly given position.

"There are some fantastic medical facilities in the Premier League and some outstanding doctors and medical staff," he said. "This role is about co-ordinating and ensuring there is a joined-up approach throughout the League, and a strategy that continues to develop on important issues that affect players' well-being such as concussion or potential heart problems."
