Netizens Call Ryeowook Out For His Twitter Persona

Super Junior’s Ryeowook recently took to Twitter to express his anger over someone who leaked the cue sheet for SMTOWN’s recent concert.

On August 14, Ryeowook tweeted about the fact that the cue sheet being leaked makes the fans lose some of the excitement, which leads to the performers (himself included) losing morale. He knew that it had to be someone close to SM Entertainment, and mentioned family members, friends of the staff, or even SM’s staff itself in his tweet, saying “I will find you and we will have a talk! xx”

Since the initial tweet, Ryewook apologized for his outburst. However, netizens found that even more problematic than Ryeowook’s initial anger. Comments on news articles said things along the lines of “If you knew it was someone close, why air your dirty laundry on Twitter?” and “If you’re going to write something then regret it and have to apologize, don’t write it at all.”

One particularly amusing comment on an X Sports News article translated to “Dance ‘Sorry Sorry’ (Super Junior’s biggest hit) until the sun comes up.”

But the most interesting comments were about Ryeowook’s change of appearance on Twitter from how he appears on television and in concerts. “He seems so feminine when I see him on TV, but why does have so much to say on his keyboard?” said one user on a Nate post.

While idols’ television personality is very closely monitored, many Korean celebrities have expressed some sort of freedom when it comes to social media, which means that Ryeowook probably hasn’t been forced to perfect his Internet persona to match his carefully constructed so-called “feminine” persona.

This is the second notable time that Ryeowook has taken to Twitter about issues regarding performances; he also was very vehement about new guidelines for Music Core.

It's unfortunate that the cue sheet was leaked, but the response from netizens is also a bit harsh; idols are held to a double standard where they get in trouble for voicing their anger. This is likely to pass and not affect Ryeowook's career, but social media is becomming more and more important in K-Pop, so it is plausible that entertainment companies will monitor it more closely with younger and future idol groups.
