'G.I. Joe' 3 Movie Release Date Revealed! Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Roadblock Character To Take Over The Franchise; Who Else Do You Want To See?

G.I. Joe 3 release date is set on 2016. While Paramount has yet to reveal the exact date for the third sequel it has been confirmed that Paramount and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is actively looking for a new director as the studio has found its writer already.

Jonathan Lemkin is tap to pen the third installment to the franchise.

Following the exit of Retaliation director Jon M. Chu due to his directorial commitments with "Now You See Me 2," Bonaventura revealed that they are now on the hunt for his replacement.

"We're just starting [to talk to directors]. We're negotiating with a writer right now, and once we close that deal-which should be any moment-then we'll have a story locked down. I'm really excited about it," Bonaventura told Collider.

Despite fairly earning at the box office worldwide, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and Retaliation received divided reviews. In fact, many of Joe's solid fanbase did not like what was done to their favorite characters.

However, having cast Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Roadblock, earned the second sequel favorable remarks. Thus, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura intends to retain him and even give him a bigger role this time according to Screen Rant.

"The last movie was really the set up, in a way, for Roadblock to take over. Dwayne came aboard a little late last time so we weren't able to do everything I think we can do this time, and really get a story that services what the audience expects out of him, and also as an actor pushes him into areas that you wouldn't normally explore in a big franchise movie perhaps."

Di Bonaventura also revealed that G.I. Joe 3 release date will mark the debuts of a number of long-demanded characters he did not divulge any details though.

Concluding his interview with Screen Rant, di Bonaventura discussed the changes that the new creative team will work on to with the third installment of the Joe franchise, saying:

"The hardest thing in film, I think, is to reduce something to something simple. You want it to be smart, you want it to have all this complexity, you want to do all these things which sometimes makes it all so confusing. (...) This time we have a very clear, very defined, tight idea that I wish I had on every sequel I've ever worked on. Simple's the hardest to get to."
