'Black Jesus' TV Show Continues To Dominate Thursday Night TV Ratings Despite Protests And Controversy

"Black Jesus" looks to be another success for satirical series creator Aaron McGruder (and co-creator Mike Clattenburg) as it dominates another Thursday evening on TV. With ratings like this, protesters of the show can probably not expect the show to disappear anytime soon.

According to TV By The Numbers, "Black Jesus was Thursday's top cable original with a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating, even with last week." The Hollywood Reporter adds, "That live plus same day showing tops all original competition on cable for the day - not to mention broadcast series 'The Quest'(ABC), 'Rookie Blue' (ABC) and 'Gang Related'(Fox), as well as NBC comedies 'Welcome to Sweden' and 'Working the Engels'."

It helps that the series continues to please critics. Indiewire recently stated, "It may not be funny in the same immediate way "The Boondocks" was, and that I still enjoy, but the laughs stick in the back of my throat all the same."

But with a title like "Black Jesus" airing on national television, controversy was bound to be around the corner. Aaron McGruder stated to the LA Times that, "This show is not an exercise to offend people," and "I want people to judge the show for what it is, not what they hear about it or the title." Unfortunately, Red Alert Politics recently reported that the AFA has already started a petition to have the show removed from air. The group claims, "The program's version of Jesus uses drugs, profanity, and inappropriate gestures, completely misrepresents Jesus."

Since McGruder and Adult Swim have had more than their fair share of controversy and even lawsuits over some of the content in his hit series, "The Boondocks," fans shouldn't expect anything to happen to the show anytime soon. In fact, Adult Swim's development executive, Mike Lazzo, has on multiple occasions defended McGruder's talents, even calling "Black Jesus" a genius effort.

With solid ratings and critical support, "Black Jesus" looks to be here to stay. "Black Jesus" airs on Adult Swim on Thursdays at 10pm.
