It looks like whoever hacked and leaked nude photos of dozens of celebrities may have one more felony to add to the list of those already committed: distribution of child pornography. It seems that Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney, one of the victims, was under 18 when some of the photos were taken. The athlete had originally claimed that the photos were fakes, but that’s not what her attorneys have been saying in letters to porn websites that have posted the pics.

Maroney’s initial response to the scandal was to take to Twitter, writing, “the fake photos of me are crazy!! Was trying to rise above it all and not give ‘the creator’ the time of day.. BUT..” along with a meme that read “You sir, need Jesus.” For whatever reason, the gymnast received a lot of backlash from followers who didn’t buy her claim that the photos were fakes. One person tweeted, “Fake? Really? Even the ones taken in your own bedrooms? Come on… What’s the use in denying the obvious?” Another wrote, “It’s obviously you, 100% real. You can’t deny it, it makes you look stupid and untrustworthy.”

 Trolls, aside, it was beginning to look like Maroney’s part in this much larger hacking story was starting to die down. That is until reports surfaced Tuesday night that one of the athlete’s attorneys has sent a letter to Porn.com, telling them to take down the offending photos or face child pornography charges (a spokesperson for the site said they took down the video immediately upon being informed of the violation). At the same time, another of Maroney’s attorneys reportedly contacted other porn sites, stating that their client owns the copyright to the photos.  It is unclear whether attorneys are claiming that all of the photos in question are authentic and were taken while the Olympian was underage, or just some of them.

 Many of Maroney’s Olympic teammates, meanwhile, have been voicing their support for the gymnast via Twitter. Aly Reisman tweeted “This scandal is not a joke and it is upsetting that an invasion of privacy results in entertainment for some.”  Gold metal winner Gabby Douglas addressed Maroney directly,  simply writing, “Love ya girl. #WeAreStrong #Champions.”
