Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Confirmed For Supervillain Role Of Black Adam: Darren Lemke To Pen Script, ‘Shazam’ Movie Out By 2016?

DC Comics continues to gear up their set of upcoming comic book films. Today, Dwayne ‘The Rock' Johnson confirmed his upcoming role as "Black Adam" in "Shazam" via twitter. While fans patiently await the casting of "Shazam" (or Captain Marvel as some fans know him), they can be assured that the project will keep rolling with newly hired screenwriter Darren Lemke. But can fans expect the film to be out by 2016?

Earlier this morning "The Rock" tweeted, "‘Kneel at his feet or get crushed by his boot.' My honor to become.. #BlackAdam #TheAntiHero #DCComics," effectively outing himself as the new supervillain in DC's upcoming project, "Shazam." Deadline reports that "Johnson has been teasing for months that he'd be starring in a DC Comics pic believed to be ‘Shazam.'"

According to Forbes, Johnson's tweet suggests that, "the role will actually be portrayed as an anti-hero rather than an evil baddie. Black Adam is indeed often given more of a blurred depiction in comics, and nowadays isn't as blatantly villainous all of the time." This speculation certainly paints an interesting picture for the "Shazam" plot.

Speaking of plot, Darren Lemke has been confirmed by Variety to be writing the script. "Lemke most recently penned the ‘Goosebumps' script for Sony; his past credits include DreamWorks Animation's ‘Turbo' and ‘Jack the Giant Slayer.' He is repped by UTA." They also expect that once the script is finished, DC won't hesitate to head into production.

But when indeed can fans expect the "Shazam" movie?

Cinemablend suspects that the other 2016 summer blockbuster date purchased by Warner Brothers is a good candidate. Add in the fact that Warner Bros. recently purchased a bunch of internet domains, (including shazammovie) and it seems likely that they will push to get this film out by 2016 alongside "Batman Vs. Superman."

With no confirmations other than these, fans will probably have another few months to wait before any more news surfaces. Until then, they can catch Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson for sure in the upcoming franchise release of "Fast And Furious 7," due out in April of next year.
