Tragic Death Of Ladies' Code Singers RiSe And EunB Prompts #BuckleUp Campaign On Social Media

Recent tragedies involving the tragic deaths last week of Ladies' Code members RiSe and EunB have prompted a deeper look at car accidents in the K-pop world and the Internet is responding in kind.

Recently, social media portals have started what is known as the #BuckleUp campaign, wherein fans and Internet users respond to photos of K-pop idols not wearing seat belts in cars.

This is presumably due to the rumors that the Ladies' Code members were not wearing seatbelts when their van hit the expressway wall.

"See Instagram selfies in a car with no seatbelt on? Tell them to #BuckleUp in comments," commented Feelbrah on redditkpop.

"Watch them ride in vans with no seatbelts in reality/variety/drama shows? Hit up personal/company/TV Station's Twitter accounts with screencaps and the #BuckleUp message. Maybe draw a red seatbelt in Paint over screencaps and photos to make it loud and clear. Even if they don't care about their own safety they will care about their public image."

Popular YouTube channel Eat Your Kimchi commented on the #BuckleUp campaign in relation to the K-pop industry and the Ladies' Code tragedy.

"While we do appreciate the #BuckleUp campaign...we still think there is a bigger issue at hand," said Simon Stawski.

"Why were Ladies' Code out so late driving back from another city in the middle of a rainstorm?" asked Martina Stawski in the video.

"It's a result of the demands of the entertainment industry in Korea...and the lack of people opposing unfair working conditions."

On Reddit, observers were similarly skeptical on the effectiveness of the #BuckleUp campaign.

"Worth a try, [but] probably won't make the biggest difference," commented Pearroc on September 4. "If anything, you need Korean fans to do this, but Koreans are terrible at wearing their seatbelts. They need the government to do a nation-wide campaign if they want any sort of change."
