Profile Of A K-Pop Fan: Why Kris Of EXO's Label Lawsuit Made Queens Teen Gurneet Kaur Like The Band Even More

NAME: Gurneet Kaur

AGE: 15

HOME: Queens, N.Y.

CURRENTLY: a sophomore in high school

INTRO TO K-POP: "My friends Amrita and Kimberley got me interested in K-pop," Kaur said. "They would talk about it all the time, which finally made me realize that K-pop is different than any other music. My earliest K-pop memory was when Girls' Generation appeared on the "Late Show With David Letterman" performing their new hit "The Boys." Though, I still prefer the Korean version to the English version of "The Boys."

THE DIFFERENCE: "I feel like it's the music videos that make K-pop different from the pop music of other countries," Kaur said. "The music videos stand out much more than any other pop music, because of the artists' hard work and dedication to the choreography. I cannot find a single flaw in any K-pop video because of how amazingly the groups all work together and how coordinated they are. The fashion is also really top-notch. Not only are K-pop artists very expressive with their clothes, they use their fashion choices to tell a story. Each outfit is unique."

FAN CREDENTIALS: Since becoming a die-hard K-popper, Kaur has been aggressively spreading the gospel of Hallyu. "I don't hide the fact that I'm a K-pop fan, I share it," said the teen. "I got three of my cousins, several best friends and even one of my teachers hooked on it. I like showing them the newest K-pop video out there. I like showing them the amazing choreography and the crazy fashion that goes on in Korea."

FAVORITE GROUP: EXO

WHY EXO: "EXO has a unique concept to their music," Kaur said. "They work hard to perfect their dance routines which makes it more intriguing and fun to watch. Exo's music video for 'Growl' was intensely amazing. The choreography was on point, everything was in sync and the expressiveness that each member showed was exquisitely breathtaking. EXO's newest music video, 'Overdose,' was well choreographed and even more vibrant." Undisturbed by reports back in May that band member Kris Wu Yifan is suing EXO's record label SM Entertainment for contract termination, the 15-year-old fan says the issue has only deepened her dedication to the group. "I love EXO because even with Kris's lawsuit scandal, they continued all of their performances, they stood together as one," Kaur said. "The current 11 members of EXO are very hardworking. And as for Kris, he must have his reasons. EXO were on point with all of their performances and gave it their best [without Kris] at their shows. They continued all of their promotions for 'Overdose' as planned."

FAVORITE EXO SONG: "Mama"

"You could never get bored listening to the song, it's a classic by EXO," Kaur said. "The choreography was mind-blowing, considering it was their very first video. The depth they had within that song is amazing. For a debut song and video, it was quite impressive and outstanding. I was stunned by the divine and exquisite choreography in the video. I was left speechless when I first saw this video."

FAVORITE SOLO ARTIST: Ailee

WHY AILEE: "Ailee started her career by getting herself out there," Kaur said. "She started by posting videos on YouTube through her channel. Aileemusic. Her cover of Whitney Houston's 'Saving All My Love' and Miley Cyrus's 'The Climb' was outstanding, which really brought out her talent. Ailee worked hard and finally made it big in Korea."

FAVORITE AILEE SONG: "Heaven"

"'Heaven' wasn't exactly a K-pop song, however the song was amazing and made its way up the charts," Kaur said. "It really displayed her singing talent."

FUTURE OF K-POP: "K-pop's future is very bright," Kaur said. "K-pop is getting more popular every year because of reaction videos on YouTube and the catchy songs by artists like Psy, EXO and Girls' Generation. I think YouTube should be recognized as a popular search engine for K-pop, because of the impact it has around the world. For me, K-pop is the new hotness where J-pop once had ruled."
