Dell XPS 15 Review: Specs Of Haswell-Running Laptop Incl. 15-inch UltraSharp QHD+ Display, Quad-Core Processor & 512GB SSD; ‘Laptop Of My Dreams’

Dell XPS 15 review: Specs of the Haswell-equipped Dell XPS 15 include a 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Haswell processor, a 15-inch UltraSharp QHD display, and a 512GB solid state drive. The machine described as “practically perfect” was also described as the “laptop of my dreams” by one reviewer.

Dell describes the XPS 15 as it’s “most powerful laptop ever.” Specs of the unit include a 4th Generation Intel Core processors, Windows 8.1 and an UltraSharp QHD+ display. The Intel Haswell quad-core processors clock in at 2200 MHz. The 15.6-inch display has a resolution of 3200 x 1800 and the unit has 500GB solid state drive. Connectivity options for the unit include an audio/microphone input, HDMI, MiniDisplay port, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.

According to PCWorld, at first glance, the XPS 15 looks a lot like an Apple MacBook Pro. The difference is it has sharper edges and a shiny Dell logo on the lid. Inside the 4.9-pound machine is a full-size, backlit, island-style keyboard. It also has a large, smooth clickpad as well as a the display that sports a high resolution.

PCWorld notes that it’s the large 15-inch display, which rests on a very tough, edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass NBT that is the XPS 15’s biggest attraction. The touchscreen is glossy and super bright as well as extremely sharp. As the reviewer from the publication notes, it’s enough to give an Apple fanboi “a raging case of pixel envy.”

As a touchscreen, the XPS 15 display is good, but not impressive. The touch is accurate and smooth but there’s a slight lag between windows. The HD playback is also reported by PCWorld as smooth and effortless, with very little breaks and minimal noise in high-motion scenes.

Thanks to the numerous ports available in the XPS 15, the user has no shortage of connectivity options. One downside that the reviewer noted is that the keyboard is a bit cramped and the key are slightly stiff. Such feature makes it difficult to type on quickly and accurately.

In terms of performance, the Dell XPS 15 performed 3.5 times faster than the baseline testing model used for a WordBench 8.1 benchmark test. It also scored high on the Office Productivity Test. The unit though definitely geared for businesspeople, can be an useful gaming machine as well.

Priced at $2,299 at the time of its release, the XPS 15 is a high-end workhorse. It bears a great screen, great performance, great overall look and easy portability.
