Saturday Night Live Fires Another Cast Member: Mike O’Brien Gets The Ax, Rejoins The Writer’s Room

As SNL prepares for its 40th season, it continues to role out quite a few cast shake-ups. It seems "Saturday Night Live" has fired Mike O'Brien after one season on air.

However, the comedian is not leaving the show altogether. O'Brien will remain on the NBC sketch series as a writer.

On Monday, Deadline reported that O'Brien, who debuted on the NBC show last season, had been bumped from his role as a featured player.

The comic, who began writing for "Saturday Night Live" in 2009, has yet to comment on his on-screen exit.

It was also just announced that 20-year-old stand up Pete Davidson will join the SNL cast as a featured player.

Additionall, it was revealed last week that Cecily Strong would no longer be co-anchoring the show's "Weekend Update." Instead, Michael Che, who is joining the cast after serving as a writer for the past two years, will be taking over the coveted role alongside Colin Jost, who debuted in the co-anchor chair last season.

In a statement on Instagram, Strong wrote, "I don't see this as me leaving Update, just as me being on Update in a looser, goofier way that is a lot more fun for me and in a way I think I'm better at. And now I get to do features with the very funny and wonderful Michael Che! No point in being angry or sad for me for something I'm genuinely happy about! Unless you are just a person who enjoys being angry or sad. Then I guess play on, playa."

News of these changes to "Saturday Night Live" comes after Noel Wells, Brooks Wheelan, and John Milhiser, who all joined the cast last season, were let go of the show earlier this summer.
