CoverGirl Ad Altered To Protest NFL: Activists Use Photoshop To Protest Mishandling Of Ray Rice Domestic Violence Controversy; Spread Hashtag #GoodellMustGo [PHOTO]

The Detroit Free Press reports that this past Saturday, a photoshopped image from CoverGirl's NFL makeup line appeared on Twitter depicting a woman with a black eye saying, "Get Your Game Face On." It was accompanied by the hash tag #GoodellMustGo, which refers to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and his protection of the league for profit.

CoverGirl is a sponsor of the NFL, and its ad campaign slogan "Get Your Game Face On" was meant to encourage fans to wear makeup colors supporting their favorite team. However, the photoshopped version is aimed at Ravens fans in the wake of Ravens player Ray Rice punching his ex-fiancée in an elevator. It seems that creators of the ad are working hard to tackle the issue of domestic violence in the league as well as criticize how the NFL has handled their players' misdeeds.

To clarify, the league is being particularly criticized for how it handled Ray Rice's domestic violence case because Rice was originally only suspended for two games. Roger Goodell has since admitted that it was a mistake to have done so, but the social media is nonetheless outraged at how lenient Rice's punishment was originally meant to be.

Many women currently support the NFL by wearing domestic violence abusers' jerseys and by blaming the women who are victimized by the players for getting hurt. This photoshopped ad aims to depict the harsh reality behind the term 'domestic abuse:' it shouldn't be something people talk nonchalantly about or ignore easily. The fact is, some NFL players are very close to getting away with battery and assault.

CoverGirl issued a recent statement on the subject, saying, "As a brand that has always supported women and stood for female empowerment, COVERGIRL believes domestic violence is completely unacceptable. We developed our NFL program to celebrate the more than 80 million female football fans. In light of recent events, we have encouraged the NFL to take swift action on their path forward to address the issue of domestic violence."
