Gael Garcia Bernal Denies Marriage To Dolores Fonzi After Breakup: ‘Rosewater’ Actor Says Monogamy Is ‘Questionable’

After reports that Gael Garcia Bernal and his wife Dolores Fonzi have broken up after five years of marriage, the 'Rosewater' actor reveals that, in fact, the couple never tied the knot.

What's more, Bernal recently discussed the institution of marriage and shared his view that, perhaps, monogamy has no place in the modern world.

In early September, it was reported that Bernal and Fonzi had split. The couple shares two children, 5-year-old son Lázaro and 3-year-old daughter Libertad.

In an interview with Elle magazine, however, Bernal made sure to set the record straight on the end to his supposed marriage to the Argentine actress.

"We actually didn't even get married," he told the magazine. "We had kids." The actor went on to explain that having children with a partner is, in many respects, being "more than married."

In terms of marriage as an institution, 35-year-old Bernal explained that the title of husband and wife was not as important as the relationship he shared with Fonzi.

"What's important is the arrangement. The responsibility. The deal. To do it with the person you're embarking on [it with]. That's more important than anything any religion or government would say. But that's a case-by-case situation. I'm not saying it should be like this. But for us it was," the actor told Elle. "The institution of family is important, definitely. And I enjoy it a lot. More than I thought I would."

Bernal, who formerly dated Natalie Portman, also shared his thoughts on monogamy, which he feels may be a relic of a more dated time.

"So many things have changed in the last century. The concept of monogamy is an inheritance of a medieval time, when family would carry the tradition of the name and certain privileges. It's a way of organizing society, perhaps. So all the moral issues that carry with monogamy and the real meaning of where it comes from? It's questionable nowadays. I can't say I don't believe in it. I just think that everyone has their own interpretation," said the actor.

So, while it appears that Gael Garcia Bernal and Dolores Fonzi have indeed split, there is a bright side to their situation. They won't have to deal with any messy divorce papers.
