Profile Of A K-Pop Fan: 16-Year-Old SHINee Devotee Tamia Patterson Of Texas On How Hallyu Stole Her Heart

NAME: Tamia Patterson

AGE: 16

HOME: Austin, Texas

CURRENTLY: high school student

INTRO TO K-POP: "I was into Japanese culture," Patterson explained. "I watched a few anime series and movies, studied Japanese and studied the culture. I was searching for popular Japanese music, when I suddenly came upon Girls' Generation's 'Gee.' I watched the music video and now I am in love with them. After listening to Girls' Generation for a while, I began to discover newer K-pop groups. Now I love K-pop."

FAN CREDENTIALS: "I have joined five fan clubs to connect with other K-pop fans," Patterson said. "It's amazing to see the other fans share their love of K-pop. It makes me very happy. I plan on writing to SHINee eventually when I learn more Korean. That will be such a huge moment for me as a K-pop fan. If they write back, it will make the moment even greater!"

THE DIFFERENCE: "When I listen to K-pop, it's different than when I listen to other pop music," Patterson said. "K-pop is more fun and engaging. It makes me want to sing along, even if I don't know what I'm saying. K-pop is the only foreign pop music that I can connect to without having to understand it. Anybody can fall in love with K-pop. I feel that K-pop music connects with fans around the world and brings them together."

FAVORITE GROUP: SHINee

WHY SHINee: "They're singing and dancing is amazing," Patterson said. "They are very good entertainers and are all super cute. But what really gets me are their personalities. They are all funny and also very considerate. Each one is different and I love them all. I will never stop being a fan."

FAVORITE SHINee SONG: "Dangerous (Medusa II)"

"I love the music used in 'Dangerous' and the vocals are great," Patterson said. "Also the harmony throughout the song is wonderful. I can't help but sing along to it every time I hear it."

FAN DREAMS: "I would really love to go to a K-pop concert one day," Patterson said. "Since I am unable to attend the concerts, I watch videos of them online that other fans have taken. I don't want to miss my favorite stars' performances."

FUTURE OF K-POP: "I hope that in the future, K-pop will become bigger and more well-known globally," Patterson said. "This can give people like me more opportunities to go to concerts and see all of these great K-pop stars in person. Many international fans don't have a chance to experience K-pop concerts and I know how frustrating it can be to not be able to see your favorite artists. It is a big moment in life and for fans not to have the opportunity to experience it, it's sad. Hopefully this will change, so all fans have a chance to go and support their favorite K-pop singers."
