James Franco To Release SNL Documentary On Hulu Before Season 40 Premiere This Saturday

James Franco is finally releasing the documentary on "SNL" that he filmed in 2008. The 90-minute film, which is a behind-the-scenes look at NBC's "Saturday Night Live," will stream on Hulu Plus starting Friday, Sept. 26.

The premiere will take place one day before Saturday night launches its 40th season on Saturday, Sept. 27.

To announce the release of the documentary, Franco posted an enthusiastic (and peculiar) picture on Instagram.

"THE SNL DOCUMENTARY is finally coming out!!! On HULU! This FRIDAY! Watch my documentary about the history of @nbcsnl "Saturday Night" on #hulu Plus: [link] #tizzlewizzl," Franco captioned the photo.

According to Rolling Stone, the project originated as a seven-minute short on "SNL" for a grad school course that Franco took at NYU. The actor decided to make the film a backstage look at an episode of "Saturday Night Live" hosted by John Malkovich and the week leading up to the show.

Franco also hosted an episode of the legendary sketch comedy show in 2008.

The documentary screened at the South by Southwest and Tribeca Film Festivals in 2010, receiving critical acclaim at both events.

In March 2013, Franco discussed the film with the Huffington Post.

"It's something I'm very proud of, and it got a great response at the festivals we took it to," said Franco. "I realized I had all of this access that people had never been granted before. And I thought, Well, heck, I'm not just going to waste this as a class project. This could be something interesting about comedy and creativity and the show."

Franco told the publication that distributing the documentary had been delayed due to a variety of complications, including executive changes at NBC Universal and the death of Oscilloscope Laboratories' co-founder Adam Yauch, of the Beastie Boys, whose company originally purchased the project.

"So, we shot a feature and put it together," Franco explained, "and then we had to go back and first get all of the performers to sign off, which they did. And then Lorne [Michaels] to sign off. But then we had to get NBC to sign off. And then NBC has some big turnover of executives, so the people who had signed off before were no longer there - so we had to get new people to sign off. Then, we sold it to Oscilloscope. And then, really sadly, Adam Yauch died, so then all of the projects with Oscilloscope were kind of tied up in a weird way."
