According to TV Guide, the official synopsis for the episode, titled "The State of the Union," reads: "Fitz prepares to speak about gun control in his State of the Union address, so Cyrus reaches out to a power couple who can provide assistance with this topic. Elsewhere, as Mellie deals with her private strife, she garners the nation's attention."

Olivia is back from her short stint with Jake and has found everyone in a state of desperation. The thirty second promo reveals that Mellie Grant is a mess from losing her son during the election. She won't get dressed, is eating junk food, and having trouble leaving her son's grave. Tabloids have dubbed her "Madame First Crazy." Abby comes to the rescue and attempts to quiet the media as the new White House Press Secretary. She claims Mellie is simply a grieving mother and that the public should have sympathy for her and give the First Lady some privacy.

But Olivia's feud with Abby is forcing her to compete with her old employee for Fitz's attention.
