Anne Hathaway Reveals She Took A Break From Hollywood Because ‘People Needed A Break’ From Her: ‘Interstellar’ Actress Talks Fame And Matthew McConaughey

Hollywood can be a fickle place. In a recent interview with Elle UK, Anne Hathaway revealed that she needed to step out of the limelight for a short while because people "needed a break" from her.

But the 31-year-old star of "Interstellar" now admits that she doesn't care what people think of her.

"This fame thing? F--ked me up for a really long time," Hathaway told Elle UK in an interview for the magazine's October issue.

The actress, who covers the magazine in a fierce black pantsuit, went on to explain why starting out in Hollywood as a teenager was a difficult pathway to navigate.

"I didn't know how to do it," said Hathaway. "I didn't know how to engage with it; it stressed me out. And people would say, 'You just have to be yourself,' and I was like, 'But I don't know who that is yet!'"

The star, who won massive critical acclaim in 2013 and an Oscar win for her role in "Les Misérables," told the Huffington Post that she took a break from acting due to negative criticism that she also received at that time.

"My impression is that people needed a break from me," Hathaway told the publication.

The actress has since discovered that it doesn't matter what opinion the media or public has of her. The only opinion that matters is her own.

"I've realized that don't need validation from anybody. At all," Hathaway told Elle UK. "I'm not sitting here now worrying, 'What do you think of me?' With all due respect, you seem like a lovely lady, but I don't need you, or anyone else, to like me. And that's so liberating. It's a big reveal, man."

In the actress's next project, Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar," she will star alongside Matthew McConaughey, who is known for his free-spirited attitude.

"The man speaks in poetry," Hathaway said when asked about her co-star. "I remember once while we were filming, something got screwed up, and he said to me: 'Look, we can get upset about this, or we can go with it and have a great story for the rest of our lives.'"

"Interstellar" hits theaters on Nov. 7.
