Michael Phelps Gets Second DUI In Baltimore, Maryland: Olympic Swimmer Reportedly Driving Twice The Speed Limit

Michael Phelps was reportedly arrested for his second DUI in Baltimore, Maryland early Tuesday morning.

According to E! News, The Maryland Transportation Authority confirmed the arrest, which occurred on Sept. 30 at approximately 1:40 am.

The Olympic swimmer was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), excessive speed, and crossing double lanes while in the Fort McHenry Tunnel on I-95.

The local authorities reported that an MDTA police officer spotted Phelps white 2014 Land Rover speeding southbound on I-395. The officer's radar revealed that the Olympian was travelling at 84 mph, nearly double the 45 mph speed limit.

The officer then followed the vehicle onto northbound I-95 and stopped it just beyond the tunnels toll plaza. Phelps was identified by his driver's license and reportedly appeared under the influence.

The 29-year-old was given a series of standard field sobriety tests, which he failed. The athlete remained cooperative throughout the process, however.

It is currently unknown how long the swimmer was held in custody. He was released sometime Tuesday morning.

This is not Phelps' first experience with a DUI. The Olympic champion, who holds the record for the most medals won by an athlete ever in the games, was arrested in 2004 at the age of 19 for a similar offense. That incident also took place in Phelps home state of Maryland.

According to WBALTV 11, Phelps struck a plea deal for the 2004 arrest and was sentenced to 18 months of probation.

This troubling news comes just days after Phelps received recognition by the competitive swimming community.

Last Friday, Phelps was nominated for Male Athlete of the Year at the Golden Goggles Awards. The award, which will include votes cast by fans, will be announced at a ceremony held in New York City on Nov. 24.
