2014 FIBA for Women: Serbia victorious over Cuba

Serbia displayed image of calmness and serenity down the stretch to give out an 86-79 win over a Cuban outfit and accomplished the Quarter-Final line-up at the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women.

This is a memorable tournament for the Serbia as they will play their first-ever FIBA World Championship for Women. They will face off the hosting team, Turkey; the same team they lost to in the EuroBasket Women 2013 third place game.

"This is the biggest moment in Serbian women's basketball," said Serbia coach Marina Maljkovic.

He added:"We have worked very hard for this. And we deserve this."

The action-packed game showed greatness of several players with determination and perseverance.

Ana Dabovic led the Serbian charge with 21 points and 5 rebounds. Marlen Cepeda's 18 points and 8 rebounds paced Cuba. Milovanovic sank her only three-pointer of the night to put Serbia ahead, 63-62, at the start of the final period.

Serbia fought back with a 10-2 spurt as Milovanovic and Ana Dabovic did much of the damage to get them back in the game. An 11-1 run starting midway through the opening period - during which Tamara Radocaj's lone free-throw kept Serbia from drawing a blank - had Cuba in the driving seat. Milica Dabovic then played the lead role in Serbia's run of six unanswered points,  helping them as they looked like they were pulling away.

There was a very close fight with both teams in the third quarter as Cuba edged in front 62-60 at the end of period, setting the stage on fire for a final frame when Serbia managed to hold their own.
