Evernote Announces New Features; To Branch Out From Note-Taking

Evernote has announced its plans to take things further as it releases new features that go beyond what the app was known for.

Going beyond note-taking, Evernote unveils its new offerings that reportedly aims to make the app "a workspace for your life work." On October 2, the company's CEO Phil Libin shared the app's new features called Context and Work Chat at Evernote's Developer conference in San Francisco.

Context, as the words suggests, gives you material about what you're working on depending on its context. You can choose from information gathered from different sources including news articles, your previous notes, LinkedIn and contacts.

Work Chat, according to Libin, aims to promote online collaboration among workers as well as to reduce the use of email.

"We're trying to recreate the feeling of being a startup," he said about collaboration. "There's something really magical that happens when you have 20 people working in the same room."

He also shared how he felt the new feature of the app can help reduce users' dependence on email and introduce an alternative, saying: "The inbox metaphor made sense when you were talking about physical mail. It never made sense for email. We are trying to break the tyranny of the inbox."

Apart from the two new major offerings, Evernote will also reportedly enhance the web version of the app. They are also rolling out "Scannable," a scanner app for smartphones which allows users to take photos of various items and send them to their Evernote account.

Workchat and Context will be available on Evernote apps for iOS, Android, Mac and PC.

Apart from the company's latest offerings, Libin also shared the progress of Evernote Market, an online shop where fans can buy Evernote-branded everyday items like notebooks and backpacks.

Evernote was founded in 2007 and offers free and premium versions of its services.
