K-Pop Crossover: 'Are You Ready' Singer David Paige On The Wild Energy Of PSY [EXCLUSIVE]

David Paige has something of a Matthew Broderick obsession.

The music video for the alternative pop rock musician's new single "Are You Ready?" is an all-in parody of the 1986 classic coming-of-age comedy "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." Paige and his video crew friends worked to channel the same manic energy that drove the film to the top of the box office charts nearly three decades ago.

It's the same kind of energy that Paige felt from Psy, when K-pop's most recognizable international star broke in America back in 2012, with the music video for "Gangnam Style," the most watched viral video clip in history.

"Psy's 'Gangnam Style' was a massive hit here, and that song is so much fun," Paige said in an exclusive interview, earlier this week, with KpopStarz.

Though the musician, whose most recent album, "Inside Out," was released back in July, has an interest in the Hallyu sound, he finds it hard to come by in the US.

"I enjoy the production and the music, but there isn't a lot of exposure here in the states," he said.

But it isn't only the lack of visibility that distances K-pop artists from American audiences.

"As a songwriter, I really connect to songs through the lyrics and, since I don't speak Korean, I lose that part of the connection," Paige explained.

Still, he believes a certain amount of infectious energy goes a long way here in the states. He also feels it goes both ways. Paige noted that Western urban pop is clearly influencing K-pop artists.

"I'm seeing a lot of similarities, especially in the production," he said. "Pop here in the states and K-pop are both using varying degrees of combining live instruments and electronic music now. In most cases, the music seems universal, regardless of language."

That makes Paige hopeful that his songs can hook K-pop fans.

"My music has really catchy melodies and powerful instrumentals. I think the melody is probably the element in music that hooks people the most effectively," he said.
