Morrissey Reveals That He Is Battling Cancer, Says ‘If I Die, Then I Die’

Music icon Morrissey revealed in an interview published today, Oct. 7, that he is battling cancer.

The 55-year-old singer and former frontman for the band The Smiths recently opened up to Spanish publication El Mundo, in an interview that was re-reported by BBC News, that his health has been deteriorating for some time. However, Morrissey admits that he refuses to worry about death.

"They have scraped cancerous tissues four times already, but whatever," the British musician told El Mundo. "If I die, then I die. And if I don't, then I don't. Right now I feel good."

Morrissey did not reveal what type of cancer he is combating but he acknowledged that the illness has worn on him physically.

"I am aware that in some of my recent photos I look somewhat unhealthy, but that's what illness can do," he said in the interview. "I'm not going to worry about that, I'll rest when I'm dead."

The singer also discussed the fact that doctors have "cautioned" him to stop touring. On the subject, Morrissey said, "it's difficult for me because it's very ingrained within me."

Over the past few years, the "Suedehead" singer suffered a few health scares. In January 2013 he was forced to cancel tour dates due to a bleeding ulcer, and in March of that year he was diagnosed with pneumonia. That July, he also experienced food poisoning while on tour in South America.

Morrissey claims that he feels his should be done with his music career soon. "[I'm] now at an age when I should no longer be making music," the indie music legend said.

"Many composers of classical music died at age 34. And I'm still here, and nobody knows what to do with me," he added, "With luck I will be able to stop singing forever, which would make many people happy."
