Fox Is Keen On Developing More Sci-Fi Series; Ordered A New Sci-Fi Pilot From Len Wiseman And Scott Rosenbaum

In this 'golden age of television", horror and fantasy series have seen huge success with shows like Game of Thrones and Walking Dead continuing to smash ratings records. On the other hand, science and fiction space adventures haven't been as successful.

Battlestar Galactica, a science fiction franchise created by Glen A. Larson was the last popular space adventure series, however, Syfy's Defiance and the upcoming series, Ascension have some potential. Most sci-fi shows like Extant and Orphan Black lean more on the cerebral side of the genre. Although Doctor Who is a sci-fi show, it's a stretch to lump it in with shows like Star Trek or BSG, where a crew analyzes the unexplored reaches of outer space.

Lately, Fox's Cosmos: A Space-time Odyssey was the most popular and successful TV series that featured space.

Considering the fact that they canceled Almost Human earlier this year, Fox developing more sci-fi series is quiet interesting. A report by Deadline reveals that Fox is ordering a new sci-fi pilot from Len Wiseman, who is best known for his work on the Underworld series and Scott Rosenbaum, who was an Executive Producer on NBC's Chuck.

The series that will feature a group of mercenaries who are sent to respond to a distress call from a prisoner transport that crash lands on an undiscovered planet was pitched as "The Dirty Dozen in deep space." The group will face numerous difficulties once they are on the alien world and conflicts between each other too are expected.

Wiseman and Rosenbaum will executive produce the show and writing/showrunning will be handled by Rosenbaum while Wiseman directs. Wiseman's has been successfully directing TV pilots, citing Sleepy Hollow and Hawaii 5-0 that went on to series. Rosenbaum too with past work on Chuck and V seems a good fit for the project.

Jonnie Davis, 20th Century Fox Television's President of Creative Affairs said, "developing sci-fi projects was a priority for the studio and network this year," and adds that they're very excited to be working with Wiseman and Rosenbaum for this project. He goes on to praise Rosenbaum as a showrunner, calling him "creative," "collaborative," and a person with a "a strong point of view."

What do you think about a sci-fi series being developed at Fox?
