A Guide To The CMJ Music Marathon For Fans Of Asian Music

On October 9, CMJ released the full schedule and programming guide for the upcoming CMJ Music Marathon. The information was first presented through the official CMJ Music Marathon app, which was followed by the release of an online guide. CMJ also announced that the ultra-exclusive performance series Sofar Sounds would be hosting surprise shows during 2014 CMJ Music Marathon.

2014 CMJ Music Marathon has a promising lineup for Asian music fans and avid indie pop listeners. While the lineup of Korean artists has been scaled down from 2013, the Taiwanese Showcase will feature some of the most talented Asian artist to be featured at CMJ Music Marathon.

Korean independent recording artists Love X Stereo will kick off their CMJ Music Marathon performances with at show at 10:30 PM on Tuesday, October 21 at Caroll Place. Love X Stereo will then perform on Friday, October 24 at Fat Baby with a 12:30 AM show. Love X Stereo returns to the United States, following their spring 2014 appearances at SXSW and shows that were part of the Seoulsonic tour.

West Coast K-Indie fans will also have an opportunity to see Love X Stereo in San Francisco and Los Angeles for the music festival Culture Collide. Love X Stereo are included in the Culture Collide lineup with Korea’s Big Phony, Front the Airport, and Rock N Roll Radio.

Audiences who enjoy Japanese music will have the opportunity to see the legendary female pop-punk band Shonen Knife. Shonen Knife is currently supporting their 2014 release “Overdrive.” Shonen Knife will perform at Knitting Factory on Wednesday, October 22 at 10 PM as part of the Panache Presents showcase.

Four member Japanese acid punk band Bo Ningen will perform two shows at CMJ Music Marathon. The group will take the stage at Pianos on Friday, October 24 at 11:30 PM as part of the Pianos and Deli Present showcase. Bo Ningen will then perform on Saturday, October 25 at Rough Trade as part of the Austin Psych Fest Presents showcase.

The highly anticipated Taiwanese showcase entitled Taiwan Music Express will feature pop idol A-Lin, hip-hop pioneer Dwagie (Dog G), and rocker Ascent. Entrance to Taiwan Music Express is free but the performance is already closed out, following in the popularity of the 2013 Taiwanese showcase. Taiwan Music Express will take place on Friday, October 24 at 7 PM at the Highline Ballroom.

In addition to performances, CMJ Music Marathon also features educational lectures, panels, and Q&A sessions. The workshop Vis-A-Visa: Surviving And Fixing The U.S. Performing Artist Visa Process may be of particular interest to attendees who have been confused by cancellations of K-Pop or K-Hip Hop performances due to visa issues.

CMJ Music Marathon will take place from October 21 through October 25 at over eighty-five venues throughout New York City.
