According to AndroidGuys.com, the APK for Android 5.0 Messenger is compatible on Android 4.4.4 KitKat firmware, which requires no root. The post also noted that those who wish to install Android 5.0 Messenger on Android 4.4.4 KitKat devices only need the APK of the app.
