Queen Elizabeth II Joins Twitter, Her Majesty Sends Tweet To Open History-Making Science Exhibit

Queen Elizabeth II is officially on Twitter!

The 88-year-old British monarch made history on Friday when she sent her first tweet at the opening of an information age exhibit at the Science Museum in London.

"It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum and I hope people will enjoy visiting. Elizabeth R," posted the Queen as around 600 guests looked on.

The Queen shared the Twitter post at 11:35 a.m. on a displayed iPad that was set up to broadcast the historic event.

From the side of the stage, Queen Elizabeth II's 93-year-old husband Prince Philip smiled from ear-to-ear as he watched his wife post the tweet.

"The last tweet was sent personally by The Queen from her official Twitter account @BritishMonarchy #TheQueenTweets," wrote the palace's official Twitter account, from which her Majesty posted her tweet.

"Well here's a thing @britishmonarchy sends her first tweet - nicely done HRH @sciencemuseum," wrote Baroness Martha Lane Fox who attended the event.

The baroness also shared a photo of another attendee who held the Queen's iPad, and who some speculate may have actually written the tweet.

"LOVE Chi who was in charge of the ‪@BritishMonarchy iPad + 'ones first tweet,'" Baroness Martha Lane Fox

Also during the ceremony, the Queen was also presented with a bouquet crafted from computer punch and ticker tape from a Pegasus computer, one of the oldest computers in the world.

This is far from the first time a royal has made history by supporting technology.

According to British newspaper The Guardian, Science Museum Director Ian Blatchford stated, "I mentioned earlier that Queen Victoria took a great interest in the invention of the telephone and Your Majesty has followed in this tradition of embracing new technology."

At the start of the ceremony, Blatchford also talked about Queen Elizabeth II's historical television appearance in 1957.

"You made the first live Christmas broadcast in 1957 and an event relished by historians took place on 26 March 1976, when you became the first monarch to send an email, during a visit to the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment," said Blatchford. "May I now invite you to join me so that you may send your first tweet."
