Korean Pop Rock Legend Shin Hae Chul Dead At 46

The Korean entertainment world is in mourning, following the death of pop star Shin Hae Chul on Monday.

Shin Hae Chul was reportedly hospitalized at the Asan Medical Center in Seoul on October 22, after suffering a massive heart attack. Upon hospitalization, Shin Hae Chul is said to have developed complications including an infection in his intestines.

Five days after he was hospitalized, Shin Hae Chul died at the age of 46.

According to an English language report in The Korea Times, Shin Hae Chul passed away at 8:19 p.m., with family members present. He will reportedly be memorialized in a service at the Asan Medical Center in Seoul.

Shin's management company, KCA Entertainment, released a statement confirming his death. The star had allegedly had been in a coma and was in the intensive care unit prior to his death.

After news of Shin's death was reported, an outpouring of condolences began to come in from performers in Korean entertainment including PSY and Seo Taiji. His passing was also acknowledged through an official post on YG Entertainment's social media including the YG Family Facebook page. 


Fans of Shin Hae Chul responded to news of his death with an outpouring of love. Responses on the forum Netizenbuzz included a look at his career and words of comfort for his family. User be, one of the top commenters, addressed one of the most recent appearances of Shin Hae Chul stating, "I didn't know him but I saw him on 'Abnormal Summit.' He looked so good and healthy." 

One of the largest events following his death will be the 2014 Style Icon Awrads. CJ E&M issued a statement to Korean news outlet Newsen addressing the death of Shin Hae Chul and plans to recognize Shin Hae Chul during the ceremony. The statement which was translated by Mnet's Enews stated " However, we will not be overlooking the unfortunate news of Shin Hae Chul′s death. We are currently preparing a tribute, which will be revealed through the live broadcast."  

Shin Hae Chul was an innovator in Korean rock and pop. He is credited for over 30 albums since his debut in 1998.

He was also a member of the avant garde experimental group N.EX.T.

N.EX.T drew criticism following their 2004 performance of the controversial song “Dear America” which was perceived as an anti-American song. Their performance of “Dear America” in 2004 also featured PSY, who was later criticized in the US for the performance, following the popularity of “Gangnam Style.”

In addition to N.EX.T, Shin Hae Chul was involved in the Korean music industry as an renowned producer. He was also the host of the MBC program “Ghost Nation.”
