Critics Love Jake Gyllenhaal ‘Nightcrawler’ Movie, ‘Brokeback Mountain’ Star Says He ‘Has A Lot Of Empathy’ For Journalists After Filming

Some may know him from thriller "Zodiac," and plenty of others probably remember him after his performance with Heath Ledger in "Brokeback Mountain," but Jake Gyllenhaal seems happy to return to his smaller indie roots, like in his breakout film "October Sky."

The actor is particularly back to those roots in his new thriller "Nightcrawler," which is due out this weekend on Halloween. Critics are impressed with Gyllenhaal so far with a strong rating across the board after its debut at this year's Fantastic Fest. Moreover, the "Brokeback Mountain" star recently said in an interview that he has gained a new appreciation for journalism after filming.

Jake Gyllenhaal recently told USA Today about some lasting effects from filming "Nightcrawler," including new insight into the career of journalists and reporters.

"I have much more empathy for the job. There's this really interesting exchange that happens. You wonder whether it will reflect what you really believe, or whether or not the exchange you have is an honest one," Gyllenhaal explained. "We know each other over time. I know also that you have your own agenda too and I have to respect that. We both have an exchange. I'm fascinated by it."

In addition to this, the "Prisoners" star also talked about his starvation diet, in which he hilariously broke said diet by heading to Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. It would seem the extreme dedication Gyllenhaal made to the role of Lou Bloom paid off as so far critics have nothing but praise for "Nightcrawler."

For example, on Rotten Tomatoes the film is currently at 85% with a critic's consensus that reads, "restless, visually sleek, and powered by a lithe star performance from Jake Gyllenhaal, ‘Nightcrawler' offers dark, thought-provoking thrills."

Fans can catch Jake Gyllenhaal in "Nightcrawler" which hits theaters this Friday on October 31.
