Review: Topp Dogg Bring Back Late 1980s R&B Production On 'Annie' New Single Celebrates Group's 1-Year Anniversary [AUDIO]

The 13-member South Korean boy band Topp Dogg are no stranger to using throwback Western dance sounds to full effect.

On the one-year anniversary of the release of the group's debut EP, "Dogg's Out," Topp Dogg have once again gone back to the past to create something perfect for right now, on "Annie."

Although the group is known for predominately channeling vintage hip-hop, "Annie," released on Friday as part of a release entitled "Anniversary," finds Topp Dogg employing a late 1980s R&B sound.

And like the 1988 Gene Griffin-produced Bobby Brown hit "My Perogative" or the 1989 Janet Jackson collaboration with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, "Rhythm Nation," that "Annie" is clearly influenced by, this is music that gets a party started.

Right when the drum loop kicks in at the top of "Annie," it's clear what we're in for-some heave 1980s era dance sounds. And Topp Dogg delivers with full force.

One unfortunate production choice is that they didn't decide to go all the way with that 1980s sound, including the technological limitations of that time period. Auto-Tune is used throughout the song, an unfortunate choice especially if it is as unnecessary for this talented group as it would appear.

And despite the fact that Topp Dogg's vocalists are able to out-Adam Levine, Adam Levine with the catchy falsetto hook on "Annie," that's setting the bar a bit low for this reviewer.

In any case, as is often true on Topp Dogg recordings, the rapping is a high point. The rappers in Topp Dogg are some of the main unsung rappers in the Korean hip-hop scene. These guys can really lay it down, clearly have studied the genre's history and often don't get the time they deserve.

But whether or not you listen to Topp Dogg for their rhyming, their vocalizing or just the well-constructed hooks, you cannot deny that this band is still developing and growing as artists.

Now, if the non-singers of the group can only get a bit more airtime.
