How To Get Your Friends To Listen To K-Pop

We'll be the first to admit - K-Pop can be overwhelming. Especially when a superfan is the one describing it.

If you've ever been the one to sit a friend down to watch his or her first K-Pop music video, you know what we are talking about. One minute you're watching a Girls' Generation video and suddenly 4 hours have passed and you haven't even started covering the solo artists.

We're here to help. It's about time that the non-K-Pop fans out there figure out what they've been missing. Here's a helpful guide to start introducing your friends to the wide world of K-Pop:

For Friends Who Saw that Microsoft Commercial and Can't Get That Song Out of Their Heads: 2NE1's "I Am the Best"

Along with being a great way for Microsoft to jab Apple with a clever dig, this song is just flat-out fun and impossible not to dance to. Have a friend stick it on a workout playlist or request it at a party when everyone is in the mood to dance, and watch your friends get immediately hooked.

For The Friend That Can't Let Go of 90s R&B: Big Bang's "Bad Boy"

Big Bang is the best way to show new fans that K-Pop isn't all neon and booty thrusts. "Bad Boy" has a smooth, almost R&B feel to it that makes for easy listening even if you don't understand a word of the lyrics.

Once they're on board with Bad Boy, you can get into Big Bang's clout. Start with G-Dragon's solo career with songs like Heartbreaker and Crooked. (His cultural significance outside of music is worth mentioning, too: bring up his performances with Western giants like Skrillex and Missy Elliot and his appearances at international Fashion Weeks.)

For a One-Stop Shop Video That Captures K-Pop In All Its (Completely Bananas) Glory: Girls' Generation's "I Got a Boy"

If this video doesn't make a non-fan want to crawl inside K-Pop and never come out - or at the very least, go shopping wherever Girls Generation shops - then we don't know what to tell you.

If You Have A Friend Who Wished N*SYNC Had Multiplied and Spoke Mandarin: EXO

The comparisons to N*Sync aren't totally fair here - EXO is more futuristic and fly than most Western boy bands ever were. But if you've got a friend that is pining for the Backstreet/N*Sync days of yore, introduce them to EXO. Start with a hit that incorporates all twelve (!) of these little whippersnappers.

Then you can get into the subgroups. Does your boy band-loving friend also happen to speak Mandarin? Perfect! Meet EXO-M.

Or, are they into ancient secret society rituals? EXO-K has them covered with MAMA.

This is a great first taste to K-Pop because it shows what puts K-Pop into a class of its own. Video containing hooded band members chanting in a monastery? Check. We've also got spectacular choreography for all six members, crimped hair, the power of fire at EXO's fingertips, and so much metallic you might need to put on your sunglasses on to watch this one.

For The Friend That Wants Some Feminism Injected Into Their K-Pop: miss A's "I Don't Need a Man"

At first glance, K-Pop doesn't always seem like it's a hotbed of feminism. Female performers are often encouraged to be young, thin, gorgeous, and to strike the imaginary balance between sensual and chaste. But there are women in the industry who, at least with some of their songs, are closer to portraying strong, smart, and sexy females that don't need male approval to get by in this world.

(See also: miss A's "Bad Girl Good Girl," BoA's "Eat You Up," and Lee Hyori's "Bad Girls," which is worth a watch for the video alone.)

For The Movie-Obsessed Friend That Wants a Short Film Experience With Their K-Pop: T-ARA's "Day By Day"

Fifteen minutes later, we don't know exactly what happened, but we do know we want more T-ARA.

This list is by no means comprehensive, but we think it's a pretty good start at converting some friends over to the good side. Let us know how it goes in the comments!
