Best Of Girls’ Generation Music Video Fashion

Girls' Generation has become K-pop's staple for performance ready costumes. The marine outfits in "Genie," the black and yellow jumpsuits in "Mr. Taxi," the cheerleader uniforms in "Oh!" and many more are all institutions in themselves. SM Entertainment has carefully crafted the girl group's brand over the years, which is feminine and cute.

But as the girls turn into women, their concepts evolve with them. SM no longer relies solely on costumes. They're still there, and no one does costumes like Soshi, but we now see the incorporation of more and more fashion pieces in their music videos. And with members who show their interest in fashion off the stage, it makes sense for Girls' Generation to incorporate ready-to-wear pieces.

Here's a list of the six music videos where Girls' Generation rocked the best fashion, independently from the costumes.

1. "Flower Power"

In true Girls' Generation fashion, the music video for "Flower Power" incorporates the use of a couple of costumes which the girls are featured the most in. However, for the individual shots, the girls dressed in chic yet conservative outfits perfect for a night in the town. Their stylists paired feminine pieces with lots of sequins with edgier ones like leather jackets. The duality in the styling played with the lyrics' reference to spiders and butterflies.

The best overall look is Yoona's, who wore a crop top with embellished flowers and high waist leather shorts. Tiffany's strappy black bustier and Hyoyeon's studded black top were also winners.

2. "I Got a Boy"

When "I Got a Boy" came out, it confused a few people. Not only was the song like anything Girls' Generation had done before, but the concept was very foreign to them as well. The music and styling was a hybrid of f(x) and 2NE1, but it still had their signature hidden in there somewhere. The girls gave their interpretation of urban streetwear with an explosion of color. All of the clothes and accessories overwhelmed the music video, but nitpicking at some looks and pieces, the styling was still one of their best.

They wore everyone from Jeremy Scott for Adidas to Lazy Oaf, and their rainbow palette complimented the song's bright and upbeat energy. But nine girls all dressed colorfully different dancing might be an eyeful to watch; where do you even start? The highlight looks in "I Got a Boy" include Yoona's outfit in the military dance sequence with the skirt and leggings combo, paired with the dangly belt and the camo jacket. Yuri's turquoise crop top and denim jacket with fringe, and Tiffany's embellished denim jacket are the best looks in the street dance sequence. Hyoyeon's tight pink dress was also the most flattering and cool in the opening scene of the video.

3. "My Oh My"

"My Oh My" is another music video where they incorporate one costume look for the dance sequence and actual clothes in the storyline portion. For this video, the stylist followed the concept of feminine meets edgy again. And while there are some cool pieces here and there, like Tiffany's pastel pink plastic-y pencil skirt or Jessica's teal leather jacket, "My Oh My" is all about the fur and feathers.

From Hyoyeon's hot pink vest to Yuri's blue jacket, the fur pieces were on point and gave the music video life and sass. Moreover, Taeyeon's baby blue fur skirt is ethereal, and Sunny's pullover with the pink and blue feathers at the hem gives the look a delicate chic touch.

4. "Mr. Mr."

In a time when most girl groups were doing sexy concepts, Girls' Generation came out with "Mr. Mr." and gave their costumes a menswear spin. The tuxedo inspired dresses and the Britney Spears fedora looks predominate the music video and were what the girls wore during promotions. However, the true standouts are the pink surgical outfits better seen in the teasers, but they do make brief cameos in the video.

The pink outfits were both striking and witty, since the stylists made them high fashion scrubs. They also wore, most likely, the sexiest outfits they've worn in music videos ever. The "edge" the girls normally give their girly pieces now had a bit of sex appeal. Starting with Hyoyeon's illusion tulle dress that seemed like a two piece set, to Yoona's jersey-like coat, to Sooyoung's crop top and mini skirt, the girls were all styled in pieces that accentuated their figures in a youthful and classy way.

5. "Time Machine"

Since "Time Machine" is a ballad, there are no costumes for dance sequences, allowing for the fashion to take center stage. Since the music video follows a storyline, the girls play the role of the nostalgic ex-girlfriend who wants her former lover back. The ex-girlfriend in this story, however, is a very chic fashionista, so the outfits are very everyday life with a stylish twist.

For their individual shots, Hyoyeon rocks the best overall look, with the floral print pants and the black leather jacket with white lining. Taeyeon, with her color blocking ensemble, follows at a close second. During the group scene, the girls don crisp monochromatic pieces, going for the all-white look. Girls' Generation is not a group known for minimalism (or anything in K-pop, really), so this look was a bit unexpected but, of course, with that signature feminine touch.

6. "Hoot"

Although "Hoot" is another themed music video for Girls' Generation, the concept focuses on different trends of the 1960s, opening a pandora box of different styles. The fashion to admire is definitely reserved for the elevator scenes, since the dance sequence, of course, involves costumes. And while their other looks could be also labeled as such, let's not forget that these were worn or were inspired by something worn in the '60s.

With the elevator scenes, the director split up the girls in groups of three to represent a trend from that revolutionizing decade. One was dedicated to mod, another hot pants and bright colors, and the last represented the sexual revolution. The pleather looks, Hyoyeon's jumpsuit and Yuri's dress, are the sexiest and most body flattering the video (or at least for these particular two curvy members). On the other spectrum, Seohyun's mod black and white dress and fur hat slay the whole thing; it's feminine yet flirty.
