Are K-pop's two most popular girl groups actually more friends than enemies? That is the question of the day for Girls' Generation and 2NE1 fans.

Currently, Girls' Generation and 2NE1 are in a race to receive the most fan votes for the Best Female Group category at the 2014 MAMA Awards. Thus, fans are especially surprised to see Girls' Generation fan Tiffany 'like' a photo of 2NE1 on Instagram.

"Can't get over the fact that Tiffany likes a 2NE1 photo on Instagram," commented YGDeprived on Twitter.

This year, both 2NE1 and Girls' Generation made their comebacks within a week of each other, leading many observers like Billboard to highlight their comebacks as a rivalry of sorts.

"We learn a lot from 2NE1 and we even follow their dance moves in the waiting room," said Girls' Generation's Sunny last year. "We always wanted to thank them for always showing great performances on stage and we will continue to follow them."

In a similar vein, Minzy notably thanked Sooyoung, Tiffany, YoonA and Hyoyeon in the "thank you" section of 2NE1's 2010 album, "To Anyone."

Currently, Girls' Generation is in second place for Best Female Group with just over 1 million votes compared to 2NE1, who has 1.3 million votes. Due to the popularity of both groups, Girls' Generation fans (Sones) and 2NE1 fans (Blackjacks) are known to be particularly antagonistic toward each other.

In September on M-Wave's website, 2NE1 won the "FKC Ranking Chart" for best female group. Garnering over 3,000 votes (28.9 percent of the overall votes), 2NE1 beat out other K-pop girl groups such as T-ara, Girls' Generation, SISTAR, After School, miss A, KARA and 4minute.

"2NE1 won," commented 21X4 on M-Wave. "Blackjacks please keep this spirit up for [the MAMA Awards] voting too if 2NE1 gets nominated!"
