6 Korean Entertainers Who Made Successful Comebacks After Scandals

Scandals can ruin a career, but there are many Korean celebrities who made comebacks after being on the brink of disaster.

With the return of the scandalous MC Mong to the Korean music scene, there are a lot of doubts about someone recovering from a scandal and returning to the spotlight. But, it's not actually all that uncommon in the Korean entertainment world. While some stars are completely ruined by scandals, others have proved their resilience and star power in Korea.

Jay Park

2PM's leader, then known by his Korean name Jaebeom, left the group in 2009 following criticism over supposedly anti-Korea comments he had posted on MySpace in 2005. Although JYP Entertainment originally supported the singer, and Jaebeom returned to the US without formally leaving the group, JYP eventually announced that 2PM would promote from then on with the other six members.

Even as rumors flew, about whether the MySpace issue or some other issues were the reasons that cause 2PM to become a six member group, it was unclear whether Jay Park would return to South Korea. However, in 2012, Jay Park started releasing covers on YouTube, as well as several singles. 2011 was his real return to Korea, and since then his career as a solo singer has taken off.

Kim Gura

Kim Gura, one of South Korea's most famous MC-comedians, quit the entertainment industry in April 2012 following a radio quote from 2002. In the interview, Kim Gura had compared the highly political comfort women, women allegedly forced into sexual slavery during Japanese imperial rule during WWII, to prostitutes.

Although Kim Gura left the industry in 2012, he returned in 2013 and picked up his role as one of South Korea's most popular MC's.

Ailee

Ailee's scandal and comeback were probably the least career-stopping out of all of the celebrities on this list. In 2013, nude photos of Ailee were published by an American Korean Entertainment outlet, and revealed to have been released by Ailee's ex-boyfriend. Ailee's entertainment company immediately started a lawsuit against the American outlet, and explained that she had sent her then-boyfriend the pictures since she had been scouted by a lingerie brand.

The incident occurred in November 2013, and even though there were some concerns that Ailee's image had been ruined in South Korea, she released "Singing Got Better" in January 2014 and won several awards from the song.

Joo Jihoon

The actor, known for his roles in Goong and Antique, was one of South Korea's up-and-coming actors, gained popular roles and numerous awards. However, he was  arrested in 2009 for the use of ecstasy and other drugs. He received harsh sentences, including jail time and volunteer service, and then enlisted in the army.

In 2012, despite the scandal his return to acting was well-received, and he appeared in the film I Am a King and the drama Five Fingers. In 2014, Joo Jihoon's agency confirmed that he and Brown Eyed Girls' Ga-In are dating.

G-Dragon

G-Dragon's marijuana scandal in 2011, where he was investigated for using drugs at a party, didn't result to any legal charges, but the K-Pop star and leader of idol group Big Bang did have to take time off and reflect. Even though the scandal gained a lot of attention, G-Dragon didn't lose any endorsements. He made a solo comeback the following year, with "All Of A Kind," a chart-topping album.

Daesung

Another Big Bang member, Daesung, was involved in a car accident that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist, also in 2011. The cyclist had already been involved in one accident when Daesung hit him again. Daesung was eventually cleared of the manslaughter charges, but he did take time off before promoting again. Daesung spent the time volunteering and doing public works.
