K-Pop Beyond The Charts: D.Holic Hypnotizes Us With Their Hard-Hitting Debut Single 'I Don't Know' [VIDEO]

K-Pop Beyond The Charts is an occasional review column highlighting Korea's modern day musical innovators who have yet to find mainstream success.

There is something intoxicating about "I Don't Know," the debut single from the five-member South Korean girl group D.Holic.

The combination of a heavy-hitting hip-hop groove and the soothing, almost angelic, quality of D.Holic's vocalists casts a potent spell on the listener.

"I Don't Know" is the perfect blend of a head-bouncing beat with several layers of beautifully executed singing. Though this is D.Holic's debut recording, there is a certain kind of poise in the way the five members carry themselves, that normally only comes with experience.

The production work on "I Don't Know" is inspired.

Walking the razor's edge of fleshing out a fully formed pop song while maintaining the spirit of a hardcore dance floor banger, D.Holic's production team employs a rawness rarely heard in K-pop.

Simple choices, like the double tracking of vocals are used to maximum affect. The sound accomplished with the voices of D.Holic is eerie, psychedelic even, like something out of a dream that you can't quite remember.

Basic sound recording techniques used to form a whole that blows away the sum of its parts; this is the way that records used to be made.

It isn't surprising that such a throwback to the days of making records before your computer could do the heavy lifting for you has a greater psychic effect on us, one that is profound and lingering.

K-pop girl groups have experimented with just about every look and sound, from sexy to silly. Maybe it's time for a group whose trademark is their spooky retro sound.

It could be Halloween all year long.
