K-Pop Crossover: MTV Iggy Selects 2NE1, CL, EXO, Big Bang And Orange Caramel For Hallyu Beginners

If you're "K-pop-curious" but don't know where to start, MTV may have the solution for you.

In 2012, K-pop and MTV collided when girl group 2NE1 won MTV Iggy's Best New Band award. Since then, MTV Iggy has continued to highlight the "Hallyu" wave, the latest being a "K-pop starter kit" for those looking for songs to listen to.

On this list are some of K-pop's biggest bands and tracks, including EXO's "Growl," "No More Dream" by BTS aka Bangtan Boys, Big Bang's "Bad Boy," 2NE1's "Come Back Home," CL's "Baddest Female," Yong Junhyung's "Flower" and "Catallena" by Orange Caramel. Of this list, observers noticed that three of the seven K-pop acts are from record label YG Entertainment, the same label as Psy.

"'Gangnam Style' catapulted K-pop into the global spotlight and brought some of the first Hallyu ripples to western shore," wrote MTV Iggy contributor Alexis Hodoyan-Gastelum.

"But the wave that continues to break. Superstar girl group 2NE1's 3-year-old song 'I Am the Best' is currently being played on a Top 40 radio station in New York after being featured on a Microsoft commercial and hitting number one on Billboard's World Digital Songs chart the week of October 11."

And they are not the only notable YG Entertainment acts to gain recognition outside of Korea.

On October 21, Epik High released "Shoebox" following the music video releases of "Born Hater" and "Spoiler + Happen Ending." Immediately upon its release, the album  topped several iTunes charts in Asia and has entered the Hip-Hop/R&B iTunes chart in the US. It eventually topped the Billboard World Albums chart.

"The album immediately went to number one in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Vietnam and Taiwan while ranking number seven on the Hip-Hop/R&B charts in the US," said an official press release from YG Entertainment.
