A Record Number of 30 New Idol Groups In 2012

In 2012, up to this point in August, the number of idol teams that debuted are 30 teams. This sets the record for the highest number of new idol groups and this is an incredible jump from 15 teams last year, bordering on excessive supply. In addition, YG Entertainment is expected to reveal a new girl group later this year, which will only increase that number.

This is only the consequence of the new idol boom that started in 2008 and though there are idol groups that have been successful, there are ones that are still incredibly unfamiliar to the audiences.

The first idol groups that debuted this year in January are B.A.P and EXO-K, FIX and SPICA. TS Entertainment, who manages Secret, debuted B.A.P and SM Entertainment debuted EXO-K, the two boy bands that have been the most prominent out of the new groups this year.

FIX, who released their first mini album in January after only doing OST's last year, drew attention because one of the members is Super Junior Ryeowook's cousin.

In February, EXID, a 5 member girl group, was produced by Shinsadong Tiger. In March, Cube Entertainment, who manages BEAST, debut BTOB, a 7-member boy band. In May, JYP Entertainment produced male duo JJ Project, who debuted with a fun dance song called, "Bounce." Core Contents Media, who manages T-ARA and Davichi, debut a 7-member girl group as well.

More recently a girl group called, Tiny-G debuted with a single "Polaris" and they faced off against Pledis Entertainment's Hello Venus, a 6-member girl group, who debuted with their single "Venus."

DSP Media debuted a 7-member boy group called AJAX, with a single called "ONE 4 U" in June and they released another single in July called "HOT GAME." On top of that there were approximately 4-5 more groups that debuted in July, including girl groups called AOA and GLAM, as well as boy bands called NU'EST and C Clown. A girl duo called Jubis debuted from Dream T Entertainment, home to Girls' Day, with a song called "Now I want to Love," and another boy group called Chaos debuted with a mini album called Racer.

In August, a 3-member girl group called D-Unit debuted and drew a lot of attention because one of the members is T-ARA Boram's little sister. Scarf has a member from Singapore and there were 4 other girl groups that debut called EvoL, Tiny-G and Fiesta. A new type of group emerged as well, as the management company for Verbal Jint debut a 3-member hip hop group called Phantom.
