B.A.P Is Defeated By Chinese Pop Vocalist Bibi Zhou For 2014 MTV EMA Best Worldwide Act

Bibi Zhou won the coveted Worldwide Act award for the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards, beating out Korean group B.A.P. She also defeated other popular acts including Australia’s hit pop rock group Five Seconds of Summer and American girl group Fifth Harmony.

Bibi Zhou’s win is largely attributed to the voting power of Chinese pop fans. In 2013, Chinese vocalist Chris Lee (Li Yuchun) was the recipient the Best Worldwide Act award. Bibi Zhou and Chris Lee were both contestants on “Super Girl,” a Chinese competition for female vocalists.
Bibi Zhou was the first runner up for “Super Girl” in 2005, while Chris Lee was winner of the competition in the same year.

Chris Lee’s win in 2013 came as a shock to many in the global community, including fans of EXO. Bibi Zhou also faced stiff competition in addition to B.A.P for her win. MTV.com provided a profile of Bibi Zhou to illustrate the relevance of her win, as well as profile of Asian artists that have previously won the Worldwide Act award.

Past winners of the MTV EMA Best Worldwide Act include Big Bang and Han Geng. The repeated triumph of Chinese female vocalists in the MTV EMAs may have an impact on the way in which female K-Pop groups are formed. SM Entertainment’s f(x) originated as a pan-Asian dance pop group but there have been few examples of similar groups.
