Psy's "Gangnam Style" Makes 15 Billion...Will He Succeed?

Rapper Psy's "Gangnam Style" music video has reached over 100 million views, beating Girls' Generation's record of 83 million views. This breaks the record for the most views for a korean artist. "Gangnam Style" is also number 31 on the U.S. iTunes 'Top 100' chart.

On the July 31 episode of NBC "Jay Leno Tonight Show," they showed a "Gangnam Style" parody with Mitt Romney. Psy has also been featured on CNN, WSJ, Times and other media showcasing the 'Psy syndrome'. His profit from this song is also huge. He has filmed about 10 commercials each ranging about 5 billion. This 'Youtube effect' has allowed him to be a newfound 'world star'.

Korean music officials have decided to break down the 'Psy syndrome'.

Psy's official commented, "In just one or two days, his views on Youtube would go up drastically. If this continues, its only a matter of time before he reaches a billion. This 'syndrome' from Youtube is now ending up in a 'tour'. He is receiving continuous calls and requests from various countries to do a performance. He is currently in the process of working with Justin Bieber's agency in L.A."

Other officials commented, "The U.S. music industry looks at Youtube as one of the most important sites and Psy receiving 100 million views on Youtube is going to attract those companies. It is hard to get one's songs known without it being played on the radio. Psy is currently working on getting his song out there after holding a few meetings with companies."

What started off on Youtube is now turned into a worldwide sensation. Officials are saying that it is up to Psy to either make it big or break it. It is Psy who has the power to open the market in the states and worldwide for K-Pop.

Unlike singers such as Rain, BoA or the Wonder Girls, Psy has entered the market due to his humor and comic dance moves. Officials believe that in order for him to stick around, he is going to have to stick to the humor.

It is also a plus that Psy's can speak english and perform live performances. In the states, concerts are important and Psy has luckily built up 10 years of experience from doing live concerts in Korea.

There have also been talk about Psy and his singing skills. It is obvious in the music video that his dance skills are far more prominent than his singing talent. Many believe that it could end with him being a 'one-hit wonder'.

His 'horse-riding' dance and comic video is what has gained much attention, much like the macarena. The idea that everyone can join in and dance together is the focal point, rather than the meaning of the lyrics or the vocal skills.

If he really were accepted because of his vocals, he would have been on music programs, but instead he is making appearances on tv shows. Regardless, he is becoming one of the newest world stars. Whether it be talent or pure humor, many hope that he will continue to spread the world of Korea and his music.
