Google Glass Release Date To Public In Limbo? Basecamps To Promote Wearable Quietly Shut Down Due To Lack Of Interest On Device, Reports Suggest

Google Glass release date to the consumer public maybe in limbo, as some of the “Basecamps” set-up to promote the wearable has shut down, according to a report by TechnoBuffalo, citing Phandroid as a source. Google, however, has said that it’s still committed to making it available to all.

The pop-up stores acted as the place where Google Glass Explorers, a group of select individuals who can purchase the gadget, can congregate and learn more about the device. It has been set-up in San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles. Although Google has not formally commented on why they were shuttered, reports suggest that it could be due to lack of interest on the device.

According to Gulf News, developers think that the prospect of the unit becoming a consumer hit are slim.

“If there was 200 million Google Glasses sold, it would be a different perspective. There’s no market at this point,” said Tom Frencel, the Chief Executive of Little Guy Games, speaking with Reuters. Frencel’s company has put the development of a Glass game on hold this year and is looking at other platforms, including the Facebook Inc-owned virtual-reality goggles Oculus Rift, reported the Gulf News.

Techno Buffalo noted that Google Glass has always been a hard sell to to the public, “who is already in a paranoid state about privacy, that wearing a computer on your face was the future.”

Google, however, is still committed in doing a consumer launch, though timeframe for a Google Glass release date is still unknown. The technology is still deemed unready for the market and there’s no rush on the company’s part to make it available to consumers.

“We are completely energized and as energized as ever about the opportunity that wearables and Glass in particular represent,” said Glass Head of Business Operations, Chris O’Neill, Reuters reported.
