The #ThanksMichelleObama hashtag sweeping Twitter shows a humorous, albeit sarcastic, take of high-school students when it comes to their seemingly gross-looking lunches.

“A new trending topic #ThanksMichelleObama is popping up all over Twitter, but the sentiment is anything but gracious,” wrote Business Insider about the new digital trend. Teenagers have been snapping pictures of their school lunches and tweeting them with the hashtag. One food item, tweeted by 17-year-old Hunter Whitney shows spanish rice served for lunch at school. "Had a very #healthylunch today," Hunter Whitney of Wisconsin tweeted, as reported by the Associated Press (AP). "The apple definitely made up for the 'mystery mush' #ThanksMichelleObama." The image of what the AP described as a “soupy Spanish rice gone wrong” with apple on his school lunch tray has been retweeted more than 170 times. First Lady Michelle Obama has advocated for healthier school meals and has been adamant about the her goal to end childhood obesity. Yahoo! Celebrity news reported that in July, FLOTUS said she’d “fight until the bitter end to make sure that every kid in this country continues to have the best nutrition that they can have.” The US President’s wife has pushed standards implemented in 2012 that require more fruits, vegetables and whole grains in the lunch line. There have been also limits on sodium, sugar and fat. Though many schools have implemented the new policies, some have said that the new food items ends up in the trash can. Whitney is a senior at Richland Center High School in Richland Center, Wisconsin who told the Associated Press that his school lunches has gone downhill over his four years in high-school. He remarked of the Spanish rice he posted, “you couldn’t feel the individual grains of rice. It was just a solid mush.” Another student who spoke to the AP, Halana Turner, a junior from Fraser High School in Fraser, Michigan, posted a photo of a not so appetizing image of a breakfast sandwich from her school cafeteria. She said that she used to like the meals serve at her high-school. Although she’s seemingly unhappy with what she gets now, she doesn’t point fingers to the school for the new meals. “I don’t blame my school for this because I know that they’re just following the rules,” Turner told the Associated Press.

The sentiment on the school lunches maybe negative on Twitter and unfortunately, a watse-maker offline. A tweet by user @realmistergray shows a picture of a garbage bin filled with school lunch trays. “This is where school lunches end up, just like your husband’s promises #ThanksMichelleObama,” his tweet reads.
