Georgia O'Keeffe just broke a record: her 1932 painting, "Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1," was sold Thursday at Sotheby's for $44.4 million, almost four times the previous auction record for artwork by a female artist.

According to CBS New York, the previous world auction record for any work by a female artist was $11.9 million, the price of Joan Mitchell's "Untitled," which sold at Christie's New York in May.

The previous auction record for an O'Keeffe work was $6.2 million, set at Christie's New York in 2001.

"Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1" was sold by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to benefit its acquisitions fund. Sotheby's is not disclosing the identity of the buyer, a telephone bidder.

Though Georgia O'Keeffe has set a new record with her $44 million painting, and this day marks a triumph for all female artists, Jonathan Jones noted for The Guardian that this is a prime example of women being undervalued in the art industry. For example, Cezanne's "Card Players" was bought for $259 million in 2011; Picasso's "Nude, Green Leaves and Bust" for $106.5 million in 2010; Jackson Pollock's "No 5, 1948" for $140 million in 2006.
