Korean-American Megan Lee Is The Latest Foreign-Born Singer To File Lawsuit For Contract Nullification

Megan Lee follows in the footsteps of other K-Pop stars from outside Korea, such as EXO's Kris and Luhan, in her recent lawsuit against her record label.

Megan Lee first made headlines through her appearance on MBC TV reality show, Star Audition - The Great Birth Season 2. After her appearance, in May she signed an contract with g.o.d member Kim Tae Woo's agency Soul Shop Entertainment. Through her partnership with Kim Tae Woo she was featured in g.o.d's 8th full-length album, Chapter 8, in the songs "The Story of Our Lives," and "Ahjussi and Megan Lee."

However, now Megan Lee is under dispute with Soulship Entertainment as she is reportedly requesting to have her contract be nullified.

Korean media outlets are reporting that Megan Lee filed for contract nullification on November 10, 2014 at the Seoul Central District Court.

Soulshop Entertainment stepped out of silence and released a statement on November 26 to address the lawsuit, citing concern over exclusivity. "The duration of Megan Lee′s exclusive contract is as written in the exclusive contract, five years from her debut," said a rep in a press notice.

"On May 11, Megan Lee brought up an audition with a U.S. entertainment agency, and our agency sent in an audition tape to the U.S.," the rep explained. "But four months later, in September, the agency did not receive anything regarding the audition."

"On October 21, we were informed by Megan Lee′s U.S. agency, with no relation to us, that she will be participating in the final audition for the U.S. drama."

"Then on November 16, after a one-sided notice, Megan Lee departed Korea and participated in the final audition, disrupting the musical schedules. After returning to Korea on November 19, she participated in the musical practice without letting the agency know."

"At this time, Megan Lee′s mother contacted, not the agency, but the musical company production affiliate, with a one-sided email, informing that Megan Lee will not be participating in practice and in the musical and about the lawsuit."

"Due to this, the musical actors and affiliates, as well as the company were put in a tough situation," said Soul Shop Entertainment in their statement.

Megan Lee's side reportedly offered the reason for the nullification lawsuit as that she was given an unfair, one-sided schedule contract. She was supposed to star as the character, Lorraine, in the musical "All Shook Up," which was scheduled to ope on November 28, but has since reportedly dropped out.

As a Korean-American singer, she is interested in debuting and working in America as well.

Megan Lee follows in the footsteps of other foreign-born K-Pop singers who have filed charges against their contracts to nullify contracts.

Former Super Junior member Hangeng (of China) left the group in 2011 after suing SM Entertainment over a contract dispute.  Most recently, two EXO members, Canadian-born Kris, and Chinese-born Luhan, have launched lawsuits against SM Entertainment for contract nullification. Luhan's case was recently sent to mediation.

Megan Lee's case against Soul Shop Entertainment is still pending.
