First Look At Penny Dreadful Season 2, Check Out First Pictures Of Cast From Set, Series Creator John Logan Says Vanessa And Ethan's "Intimacy Grows" [VIDEO]

"Penny Dreadful" was Showtime's breakout hit this past year, and has been renewed for a longer second season with an expected release date in January 2015.

The first images from season 2 have just been made public. John Logan, series creator and executive producer, says , "This season Vanessa and Ethan face new challenges, and old enemies, and turn to each other for solace. Their intimacy grows as they are forced to confront their demons together."

Created by screenwriter and playwright John Logan and executive produced by Logan and "Skyfall" director Sam Mendes, "Penny Dreadful" drew 4.8 million weekly viewers across platforms.

"Penny Dreadful" is essentially a Victorian Era mashup, stories involve popular characters such as Mina Harker, Abraham Van Helsing, Dorian Gray, and Victor Frankenstein and his monster. Its funny that this concept ended the career of one James Bond, Sean Connery in "League of Extrodinary Gentleman," and is reinvigorating the career of another James Bond, Timothy Dalton.

In most recent news creator John Logan has released a video detailing how the fights were done, he said, "You want an action sequence to have its own DNA and feel to it. We wanted the 'Penny Dreadful' action sequences to be appropriate to the piece, so our fights are barroom brawls; they're really ugly and violent - it has the feeling of savagery.' You can watch the full video below.

Eva Green has talked a little bit about how Vanessa and Ethan's (Josh Hartnett relationship "is going to be very much explored. They're going to get closer," Green said. "It's a very beautiful relationship." You can watch the full interview here.

The show has reelased its first teaser trailer for season 2, which you can watch below. Patti Lupone has joined the series as a character close to Eva Green's Vanessa, "a mysterious character of great importance in Vanessa's past." "Vikings" alum Sarah Greene will play Hecate, the "powerful" daughter of Helen McCrory's Evelyn Poole.

According to a recent interview with the Huffington Post, show creator John Logan said, "I think I feel the freedom to explore the sacred texts a little more -- those texts being "Dracula," "Frankenstein" and "The Picture of Dorian Gray." Now that I've brought this family together, I can pull at them in different directions. I can set characters in opposition in ways they haven't been yet. I can bring characters who haven't met together and sort of play the game more complexly. To me, the first season was about putting the pieces on the board. Now I get to play with them."

"Yes. I figured out the cosmology of the show for three years. I always envisioned the first season as being about the hunt for Mina and the chief antagonists would be vampires. In the second season, I wanted a human -- an almost human, or perhaps human -- antagonist, and that was going to be Madame Kali, whom we met in the second episode of Season 1.

I only wanted Helen McGrory to play her. I've worked with her twice before. She's a brilliant actress and I knew what I wanted this character to do in the second season. So thankfully, she signed up for the two episodes in the first season, and then she's a series regular in Season 2, as an antagonist. Simon Russell Beale comes back as well, and I think he's in eight of the 10 episodes. He's the Egyptologist and he weaves into the plot a lot. And there are a couple more [new characters] as well. New villains, new challenges, new adventures to come."

Douglas Hodge will play Bartholomew Rusk, an "intense Scotland Yard investigator on the hunt to discover who is responsible for the terrible murders that have been plaguing London." Lastly, newcomer Jonny Beauchamp will play a "young man with a singular past."

In a recent interview with Radio Times Billie Piper said, " A big part of it [the snow] is about mortality," says Billie. "It's a group of fearful people, really - they're not sailing through life effortlessly they're really disturbed and dysfunctional - and they're all a bit punky, I think; they're all rebels or people who are really disillusioned by life or are seeking something alternative - or just have an enormous interest in death.

"There's also this huge religious thread to it as well - people burnt by religion and faith - and then there's Frankenstein, who is science over anything spiritual. They're asking these enormous questions. They're all really profound in that sense. They're all really smart - there's not a thicko amongst them! - and I think that makes a really exciting drama."

Shooting on the new season started last week, and various crew members have been tweeting photos and updates. The cast includes Reeve Carney, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Rory Kinnear, Billie Piper, Danny Sapani, Harry Treadaway, Josh Hartnett, Simon Russell Beale, and Helen McCrory.

The Daily Mail and this Irish gossip blog also has some behind-the-scenes photos taken by fans.

New spoilers for the upcoming season suggest that Caliban will have a larger role next year and some fans are wondering if he'll terrorize London with his new bride, Brona. Also, Eva Green was spotted filming in Dublin as well.

Finally, "Penny Dreadful" showrunner John Logan also hinted that Season Two will be much more "horrific" as well.
