Rumors of "The Vampire Diaries" star Paul Wesley leaving the series for good surfaced upon the announcement of his latest project. Phoebe Tonkin's boyfriend will not only star in an upcoming sci-fi film entitled "Convergence" but will also produce and direct it.

Plot and details about the flick are still sparse but according to Deadline, "Convergence" will revolve around a group of underground biotech engineers who decide to experiment with a new technology. Little did they know that such step would surprise them.

With the announcement of the project, does it mean that the 32-year-old's character Stefan Salvatore will finally reach his demise in the hit CW series?

Phoebe Tonkin's boyfriend hinted about his yearning for a different and darker character: "My first couple of hiatuses I was looking for indies to separate me from the younger material. Now I'm looking for flawed characters, because my (Vampire Diaries) character is very heroic. My character in Convergence is not the protagonist but is the guy who pushes things a little too far, and too hard, and produces some scary results."

In a previous interview as well with Tri-town News, "The Vampire Diaries" star Paul Wesley said he's unsure if the supernatural series would continue: "I definitely think the show has another year in it. Past that, I don't know - I'm not sure. I don't know if the storylines work. I don't know if anyone's going to be around. It's such a hard thing to say, but I think the show has another year in it."

Meanwhile, CEO Jonathan Lim of Crimson Forest Entertainment, the group that will finance the project, is positive that Wesley's latest endeavor will "resonate with audiences on a global scale." Lim is looking forward to begin production in 2015 with a "talented cast and crew."
