YouTube Upgrades View Counter In Response To Psy's Record-Breaking 'Gangnam Style'

Psy has done what Kim Kardashion cannot, and actually broke the Internet, or at least YouTube.

Google-owned YouTube had to upgrade its systems after "Gangnam Style" gained over two billion views. The video-sharing website had been created with a system that could no longer count the amount of hits on a single video.

YouTube shared the news on the official Google+ account on December 1.

"We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY. "Gangnam Style" has been viewed so many times we have to upgrade!" the company wrote.

"Hover over the counter in PSY's video to see a little math magic and stay tuned for bigger and bigger numbers on YouTube," they said.

Now, "Gangnam Style" viewers can see the numbers tick away on the counter of the song.

"Gangnam Style" is the only video on YouTube to have been watched over two billion times. Justin Bieber's "Baby" comes in second, with over one million views. "Gangnam Style" was the first video to reach one billion views on YouTube in December 2012.

The music video for "Gangnam Style" was uploaded to YouTube in July 2012, and became a global hit that summer. An alternative version of the song featuring 4Minute rapper HyunA called "Oppa Is Just My Style" is the twenty-fifth most watched video in the world, as of November 26, 2014.

Psy's "Gentleman," the follow-up song to "Gangnam Style" is currently the eight most watched music video on YouTube. The day after it was loaded to YouTube, "Gentleman" became the most watched music video in one day, with over 38 million views on April 14, 2013.

Psy has postponed the release of his upcoming song, "Daddy," is working on a new album for 2014. He will release several music videos for the album, including "Daddy."
