I Stayed Up For MAMA: An International Fan's Red Carpet Recap

Make no mistake about it, Mnet Asian Music Award (MAMA) will be the hot topic for several days in the world of Hallyu. The December 3, 2014 ceremony was a highlight globally for fans of Korean entertainment and pop culture. In fact, many fans worldwide tune in at all hours of the day to watch the live stream event online. Many also flood various SNS outlets with their opinions and quick photos during the event to share with other fans.

As a K-pop fan of only 2 years, this was the first time I tuned in for the MAMA awards. I have watched videos of performances from various years, but I made an (insanely conscious) effort to go to bed early and wake up to watch it in my timezone: 3:00 a.m. Here is a recap of the 2-hour red carpet experience from a sleepy fangirl's point-of-view.

2:45 a.m.: What is this madness? Am I really getting up for this? I have work in a few hours! I slinked out of my bed, zombie-walked into my living room and hooked my laptop to my TV. A strained yawn, point-and-click to the Mnet website, a pen and paper to jot notes, and I was ready! Well...sort of, because--

3:09 a.m.: The livestream was not working! The website alerted viewers that there were technical difficulties.

BTS: New Hair, Those Pants and Birthday Fun!

As soon as it was fixed, I was able to catch the beginning of Bangtan Boys' performance of "Boy In Luv." The guys darkened up the vibe with a strong red-and-black theme with their fashion choices. Leader Rap Monster also changed his hair color to a vibrant red! Speaking of red, vocalist Jimin graced the stage with the red pants that had A.R.M.Ys talking from the "Hormone War" video. Surprisingly, Suga came out with braids, a hairstyle that seems to be coming back into the Korean hip-hop scene. BTS' oldest member, Jin, looked full of energy as he danced and performed on his 23rd birthday. #HappyBTSJinDay!

Runway or Prom?

When the live feed made its way back to the red carpet hosts, I could not help but wonder why Moon Hee Jun was placed with women in very high heels. The height difference was very noticeable! In fact, popular bloggers theONESHOTS poked fun on Twitter with this message: "Someone please get #MoonHeeJun a box...or some insoles."

The only other thing more entertaining than the sudden change in the visual horizon was the outfits that various acts wore. The recurring theme was dark hues, such as striking reds, rich blues, and classic gray and black; or white. The contrast in style from one idol or actor to another gave me a sense of runway versus prom looks on the red carpet! Netizens were encouraged to login and vote for their favorite look of the evening, increasing the global interaction for fans.

Most of the men kept things fairly consistent in altered tuxedos, but Jung Joon Young embraced his inner rebel rocker with a sleek outfit. Kang Sora also went for a lacy number from H&M that was definitely a showstopper.

The most memorable fashion moment was SISTAR in their lovely white dresses. Each dress complimented the lady's unique styles and looked amazing.

AOA and the Start of "Lip Sync Gate"

The ladies of AOA, dressed in matching black latex outfits, did not have the most memorable pre-show performance, but the highlight of was the transition from "Mini Skirt" to "Like a Cat." Netizens took to SNS accounts to share their frustration with the group not actually singing.

Block B gets the party going

Eclectic! Fun! Loud! All the things you don't imagine you would be excited to experience so early in the morning! Block B gave a great performance that would make any BBC proud but the group did get netizen complaints for lip syncing some parts.

Introducing Fred Cheng

More-so an introduction to anyone who is not tuned into Hong Kong's entertainers, that is. I was impressed with the power vocals of TVB actor and HOME lead vocalist Fred Cheng's live performance. The performer took the stage solo, donning a black leather jacket, white button up, black skinny tie and black pants. I might have to add a song or two to my playlist soon!

EXO for the Win

The red carpet pre-show concluded with the announcement of EXO as the winners of the best dressed idols. The group dressed in various black outfits and looked very cohesive. Congratulations, EXO-L on your hard work and votes!

waking up early for the pre-show experience will be a new annual tradition of mine. What did you think of this year's pre-show?
